My truck has the JBL system, I wasn't planning on messing with it but then I noticed Crutchfield has the 6x9 and 6.5 Infinity speakers for roughly half price w/free shipping and they throw in some installation hardware as well. The one thing I'm really wondering about are the tweeters up front. Some posts on here say they're 4 wire, others that they are 2 wire, and that they are a 2.5" speaker and not a tweeter. So my question would be should I purchase a separate tweeter from say JBL and a dash mount for it or should I be looking for a 2.5" speaker to replace them with?

In the JBL system it is a 2-wire connector. It is a 2.5” driver but can be replaced with a tweeter if you want.

keep in mind, the factory JBL speakers are 2ohm, so if you replace them with 3 or 4ohm speakers, be prepared to lose some volume

Hey man, good to know there's other people doing a component speaker upgrade. I have the stock JBL stereo. My new component kit is the Infinity 9630 it came with a cross over box. Where do I install it? I noticed the OEM speaker wires run back to the stereo or amp. for the tweeter and coaxial speakers.
The cross over has 1 input and 2 outs. Any ideas would appreciated.

In that scenario, you’ll only get to use the external crossover on the new tweeter.

back at the amp (mounted by the sub behind the passenger side back wall) you’ll need to locate the wires going out of the amp to the factory tweeters.

These wires will need to be cut (ideally several inches away from the connector, so it can be reattached when needed)

These wires will now go out of the amplifier to the input of the external crossover. Then the other side of the cut wire will connect to the tweeter output of the external crossover.

That was another thing, would I be better off using components up front since its a woofer and tweeter already? The main thing I don't like about stock is that all the voice tracks come out of the dash while the door woofers just kind of thump along. I'd like more range.

Without a new amp (or some equally expensive summing devices) you’re not going to get any more range out of the doors. The JBL amp has digital crossovers set for all 7 speakers in the truck.

Ok, I need to hook up the cross over unit at the amp tweeter only. .? Time for a new amp?

What is a good amp? I don't thump music, just rock it.

The amp sends lower frequencies to the factory tweeter that the new tweeter can’t handle, so we need the new external crossover to prevent those lower frequencies from blowing our new tweeter.

for a new amp, you’ll need the PAC AmpPro ($250) and the wiring harness ($40-$50) and a new amp ($150+ depending on power and quality)

Got to see how the it sounds with the tweeter cross over, and use the wire that was connected to the lower driver wire in door as originally connected with no cross over. Correct.
I am thankful for the advise.

I can cut the tweeter cross over in at the door?

You can, but it will be more work down the road if you decide to upgrade the amp. Personal preference but either way will work

Another thing what if connected at the door both positive leads and both neg. leads to the cross over input then connect the new speakers to the outputs?
