While i’m at it, replacing the pump with a used or rather, recycled, one, in line filter, yay or nay? I have seen mixed reviews. If yay, what’s a preferable brand?

I don't really see much benefit. It has a filter already in the form of the screen at the bottom of the reservoir, so your adding one more thing and more connections to deal with. And it's a closed system with no combustion or anything going on, so long as it doesn't overheat, it should be good.

I added an aux power steering cooler though, primarily because a previous owner ripped out the little factory one

    Thank you....

Didn’t know there is one or supposed to be one. Whereabouts is it supposed to be?

At the very bottom of the reservoir. It tends to get clogged up and make the pump squeal.

Interesting this is not your normal hydraulic system where the filter would go on the pressure line to prevent damage if the pump fails to all the controls etc.

I think the steering Rack could take a few pump failures with little damage

    I would pass.

I have never added a filter but I do periodically use a suction gun to pull as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible and refill with fresh.

I'm already disassembled, so the other is going in tomorrow. I got a great deal on a used OEM. Res, pulley & pump with 45,000 for 73.00, 6 mos warranty. Since there's no core fee to mess with, maybe I'll rebuild it & put it on Ebay or save it for my second 1st gen which I aspire to get someday....

Clogged screen at bottom of reservoir. Interesting, I wonder if that is why I get a squeal at startup sometimes?

Change your P/S fluid every now and then and you won't need a filter.

Except when the rubber hoses start to deteriorate over time (20-25+ years) and bits of rubber mix with the fluid. These trucks take ATF Dexron-III type for PS fluid too.

Seems like a filter on the pressure side would not work because it would decrease the pressure. Better off on the return side.

Yes, I recommend adding an in-line magnetic filter to your power steering return line. I also recommend one for your transmission that you can install in the cooler return line.
For the Power Steering, get your air box out the way and install it in the return line just before the reservoir. Put it in a spot that you can easily get to when you have to change it, basically a few inches before it enters the reservoir. You just have to cut out a short section of return hose to allow it to fit without kinking the hose. It's very easy to install. They are rated for 30k miles.

For the trans, the return cooler line is the line that runs back to the transmission from the driver side of the radiator cooler. Again, cut a section out and install it at a spot easy to get too. I installed mine under the fan shroud.

There's nothing wrong with getting a little extra filtration. By running these filters, you'll guarantee to never have a clogged power steering reservoir screen or a clogged transmission filter. These magnetic filters will filter out finer particulates than the fine mesh metal screens can in the power steering reservoir and the trans filter.

This is what I suggest you buy. They are the same for power steering systems and auto trans systems.

Great info from @Timmah! love ur videos. I agree 100% it can’t hurt. I’ve got mine installed inline if trans cooler. Just recently added the auto meter trans temp unit 5757. Looking into steering cooler setup when I get a larger trans cooler and re- using the smaller after it’s cleaned up

This did not occur to me as I'm not one to keep a hose like this on a vehicle for 20-25 yrs, but if you are, yeah, front-end the p/s system with a filter. Just remember to change the filter once in awhile.

If the hoses are deteriorating, it seems like a better option to replace them.

The hoses might look good on the outside, so you won't know they are deteriorating, but it might be a better idea just to replace them after 20 years.

Well in this case wouldn't that mean lines? Any hoses are connected to the lines, correct? Just wondering if I'm missing something I should swap out. Did my lines with the R&P

I don't know what lines are. The fluid goes through rubber hoses and metal tubes.

I would not replace any of the power steering lines just because there's a chance they could be deteriorating from the inside out. If you're having a fluid delivery issue, sure, maybe one of the linings of one of the hoses has deteriorated and is causing an issue. If you aren't having a fluid delivery problem, I wouldn't spend money on replacing lines. The short rubber return hose line that connects to the reservoir could very affordably be replaced with some bulk line from an auto parts store. The rubber pressure and return lines that connect to the steering rack on the other hand are very expensive. Don't waste money on things you don't need to replace. That's my two cents.

Two things on the pressure hose.

    1) Its a pressurized hose and as it degrades, its getting weaker. Its not an enormous amount of pressure and its definitely overbuilt, but, it will fail someday, and you don't get to choose when. That is one thing to consider. It need to be replaced someday if you are trying to avoid a failure in service.

    2) It'll also be clogging filters as it degrades, and at $25 a filter, you can replace 3 filters before you've spent roughly the same money as a gates pressure hose for $81 on rockauto. And that doesn't do anything for number one.

I don't know how long those filters last or how quickly it degrades, but on a 20 year old truck, I think I would still opt for replacing that hose.
