    Does this tune the Transmission?

I had the OV tune on my last tacoma that Matt the owner did for me. I really liked it. It changed the shift points and didn't start in 3rd gear anymore.

Yes, there are transmission tweaks with our calibration.

I will say, the transmission tuning is mild in comparison to the 3rd Gen. These trucks did not require NEARLY as much rework for proper operation. But we've cleaned things up, yes.

I hope by cleaned up you mean you fixed the aggressive shifts from 1>2 and 2>3 (which are even worse in cold weather). I also get a weird shudder sometimes downshifting around 48 mph. The transmission is definitely leagues better than the 3rd Gen though. I'm very excited for this tune. Thank you all for the hard work!

One thing I am curious about is whether you can disable the auto start/stop with your tune? I have a hybrid OR and I'm in the habit now of shifting over to S8 which doesn't allow the ice to shut off. Or I switch on tow/haul if I need to go into reverse which also bypasses start/stop. Would be nice to not have to do that every time.

    Manuals are supported.

I know the rev-hang question is on everyone's mind. We're working on it; while it's not something we addressed on the initial launch, we're actively working on it. It's not a simple switch that can be turned on/off.

So I watched the video and I was wondering if you guys could explain Toyota's implementation of the drive mode selector? What parameters are getting modified when we switch from normal to sport mode for example? I assume that the OTT tune is much more comprehensive than what the drive mode selector changes but was just thinking it would be cool if Stage 0 could be flashed to normal and Stage 1 could be flashed to sport. I'm pretty confident this isn't possible based on the design of the systems from Toyota, just thinking out loud. I'm guessing normal and sport modes are just a small handle full of parameters that are part of the larger overall tune, but it would be cool for two tunes to be toggled on the fly.

    Great questions!

The drive mode selector does a few things (I'm going to simplify things a bit), but generally speaking, there is a separate subset of maps selected based on the drive mode. The most noticeable changes you'll notice are the throttle sensitivity and shift point changes. The primary engine calibration, however, is unchanged based on drive modes. The same boost, fueling, spark, cam timing, etc. all remain the same no matter which drive mode is selected.

Our calibration work involves more than simply selecting a different drive mode. However, within our calibration, we rework each drive mode independently (where applicable). With independent control, we can tailor the drive modes to our liking. Now, that doesn't give us infinite control, we have elected to retain the OE Toyota control strategy for the drive modes for our production files, as we do plan to put our calibration through CARB and obtain a 50-State EO with these calibrations, and thus custom coding and function was something we wanted to avoid. Future Staged tunes might incorporate custom coding features, but all that is TBD. So, at present, we can't have Stage 0 in Normal and Stage 1 in Sport, as you mentioned. I understand and see the potential in things like this, so it's not off the table, but it would require custom coding.

Thank you for the explanation. I can't wait to give this tune a try and I appreciate the extra effort you are putting into these tunes to make them right and to protect the longevity/reliability of the vehicles.

Could you post a video of a 0-60 time comparing it to a Tacoma Hybrid model? Great review by the way.

My only concern is for those of us within the Transmission TSB VINs....what a great excuse this would be for Toyota to deny replacing our transmissions if they fail.

What do you mean by “impact”?

We have some specific tweaks done in tow-Haul, if that’s what you’re asking.

What is happening when i am waiting to cross busy traffic on a hill and i floor it to merge and nothing happens? It seems to just pause 4 seconds before choosing 3rd gear which pulls it back out of boost with low rpm and lags. My 3rd Gen also did this before my OV tuned the trans.

In Canada you cannot make any modifications to your truck even just changing the exhaust will cancel all warranties on the vehicle unless it is approved by Toyota .Of course I am talking about mechanical or electronic or emissions.
