At some point the in dash navigation maps will need updating. Prior to 2020 there is a SD card in the radio. How are the 2020 and newer Tacoma maps updated? Is it at no cost?

I have a 2020 but no navigation but I have used the Toyota Navigation on my sister-in-laws minivan. I believe they still charge for updates. I would suggest you just use Google Maps/Apple Maps/Waze for navigation via Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. Apple and Google (Google owns Waze too) have spent (and continue to spend) an insane amount of money continuously updating and improving their mapping apps with no charge, better usability, and more features than the OEM navigation.

I think they do 1 or 2 updates free. That's up here in Canada.

It’s over the air, one of the advantages of having built in WiFi. As long as you have an active subscription it will update real-time. comes with a free 3 year trial.

that being said, it’s pretty trash in my experience. Google maps on car play/android auto will kick its ass any day.

I’m a fan of the Factory nav system. I really like that it shows 90% of the forest roads and desert trails I off-road on. The bread crumb feature actually came in handy for me last weekend when I was exploring a series of dirt roads near an old mining complex in the desert and needed to know what trails I’d been on and which one would take me back the way I came.

However I don’t have WiFi enabled in my truck nor have I done any updates to it. I also rarely use it for navigating around town or for finding addresses.

The wife's '18 has nav (and a CD player) but no Apple Car Play. My '20 has no NAV (or CD player) but it does have Apple Car Play. She has used the NAV a few times and says she likes it. I am perfectly content with Apple Car Play. I had NAV in the '17 F250 I traded and never used it, I always used my phone interface.

The Toyota Nav is just ok, in my opinion. Often it takes me out of my way to get me somewhere and has no updates for road closures. I wish mine had Android Auto, but when in doubt, I just pull out the ol' Google. Toyota Nav is good for not draining my phone battery on long trips and for when I have no service.
