Anyone take a trailer over Imogene pass before? I would never attempt this on black bear, but hearing mixed reviews about Imogene..

We’re in Ouray tonight and want to stay near telluride tomorrow, but have a small (very off-road capable) trailer in tow. I know I can take the highway, but where’s the fun in that??

2007 DCSB TRD off-road with 33s and a competent (if slightly reckless) driver.

I’ve seen videos and it doesn’t seem too bad, but am I crazy to consider pulling a trailer over?

Call Norwood Ranger District (970) 327-4261 or Ouray Ranger District (970) 240-5300 on this and opening date.
When open the road is rocky, steep, narrow, muddy, and can have snow/ice when first opened in places and passing can be dangerous and that would be the main issue. Some tight turns on steep grades also.
Remember uphill has right of way (supposed too but depends) so if you have to backup good luck or in fact even cram those 2 over so others can pass if a group. Often very busy. If heavily loaded braking could be an issue as well as uphill power/traction condition based. They run tours up there using big pickups with seats in the caged bed and they are slow moving and pull over a lot as you can guess.
RV length restriction set at 300 inches or 25 ft so not sure on truck/trailer if this applies.
Imogene and Black Bear usually opens by July 4 so see:

I’ve done Imogene a few times now going from telluride to the ourray side the biggest issue is probably oncoming traffic there are some places that are super tight when passing

As far as turns there was only one left turn going up hill where I kinda puckered as the right side was a cliff and drop off

when you get down in the ourray side there are some pretty big rocks/boulders that may give you a bit of a hard time but if it’s your first time I would not take the trailer scout it out first also Colorado had a shit ton of snow so call the ranger first. A few weeks ago I wanted to go to Alta lakes near telluride luckily I called ahead even though it said the area was open online, the ranger said it was still 10 feet of snow
