I'm buying a set of winter rims and blizzak snow tires. Do I really need tire sensors???

I have a 2018 TRD 4x4 Sport truck with access cab and a manual transmission. I have the stock tpms.

How much is the truck going to nag me if I don't put tire pressure sensors on the snow tires/rims???

If I get new sensors, it's at least $168 which is not just chicken feed.

Plus, there is this note on the tire rack website:

Only OE TPMS sensors from OE alloy wheels will fit in the alloy wheels we sell. Sensors from OE steel wheels will not work in alloy wheels. The OE alloy wheel TPMS sensors are available for purchase from us. New TPMS sensors must be initialized at the dealer.

More hassle and more cost no doubt ^^^

I searched for and read several previous threads that I may be able to turn the tpms system off with my moderately sophisticated Harbor Freight OBD scanner. Nothing definitive though.

    thx

You get used to the light, I've done that with a number of cars over the years. A second set of TMPS really isn't worth it, you should be checking your tire pressures regularly anyway.

    Constantly.

You could open the "summer" tires, remove the TPMS sensors, install them in a PVC vessel, pressurize to your tire pressure, leave the PVC vessel in the truck. In the Spring, put the TPMS sensors back in the "summer" tires. This will avoid reprogramming the truck.

    or.

Get a set of CLONEABLE TPMS sensors installed in the winter tires. Have these cloned to the "summer" sensors.

I got my local discount tire to install cloned sensors in my winter wheel set for my car. I dont have to do anything with the sensors when I switch wheels.

I did have to specifically ask for them to be cloned though, the first guy I asked had no idea it was possible. The Manager knew though.

I have a second set and don't use tpms. You'll be just fine.

Wow! Great information in two minutes. The depth of the forum brain trust is amazing.

Yes, I check my tires. Bugs the shit out of me to see people driving on low tires. I have finally given up leaving notes on people's cars that have dangerously low tires. Still have mixed feelings about that. But I can't fix everything for everybody all the time.

While you dont need them, I would argue that winter is the time you would want them the most.

In winter, leaks happen more often on the bead, tire pressures change with temperature. If you have a leak it will most likely happen in the cold weather.

How do you get rid of the “nag”? Or just get used to it? Can you turn off “tpms” monitor?

They've been mandated since 2008 so I'm not sure if there is a way to disable it.

Going through the Maine woods, it was really nice to see my pressure going from 28 to 27 to 26 to 25 to ..... 17 as I had a leak. As we're in the shrubbery, I knew "I need to find a clearing to put a spare on". NEED it, nah. Nice to have, for sure. Especially if you care about tire wear.

You can get something like this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013RIQMEO?_encoding=UTF8

I THINK with some apps, these can reprogram the TPMS as long as you know the TPMS codes for each. I plan to do it through Techstream and a USB cable, overkill but I will need to be able to get in there for airbag recalibration.

No states will fail for a TPMS light, though. I have an airbag light when I have my sleeping platform set up, so that's a problem though.

@sbx22 said he doesn't use tpms so I wondered how he handled the “nag”.

I run Blizzaks in my 17 with no tpms. I parking the driveway, with the summer tires stacked in the corner of the garage.

I can drive around town all winter with no lights and no warnings. If I drive for 30 minutes or longer the tire light flashes and then stays steady. As soon as I park in the driveway it goes off again.

Winter pressures are a bit lower than summer, and Blizzaks are soft. I’ve never had one go down, and never even had to add air after swapping them on.

Even if you had the time you would have to go to the dealership/tire shop to have them programmed twice a year- kind of defeats the purpose of having another set to do yourself.

I went with cloned sensors just to shut the light up. PSI readings only seem to work with whichever ones were "loaded" last, but at least I don't get the annoying light.
