My ignition lock cylinder is worn out, drivers side door lock cylinder does not function and the passenger side isn't far behind so I'm going to replace these cylinders.
I'm not to worried about getting everything re-keyed to match, having 2 keys doesn't bother me that much, might deal with that later.
My 97 has power doors and tilt steering so my question is this, when ordering new cylinders do they have to be specific for tilt on the ignition lock cylinder and specific for power doors on the locks. Don't want to order the wrong stuff.
Also, can you order the door cylinders and ignition lock cylinder already keyed the same as a set?
I've searched but haven't seen an answer to these questions, sorry if I've missed something.

I had similar problems with my 98. I used this stuff that a local locksmith sold. It's called Houdini lock lube. You can find it on Amazon as well. I sprayed down my lock cylinders, door latch mechanisms with this. It also has a nice citrus cent. lol I haven't had any problems at all and maybe apply the stuff yearly. I live where the environment is not a good friend to lock cylinders so I know the stuff works great.

With my ignition my key kept getting stuck in there. I don't have high crime where I live so I went with this method. You take the ignition out. This is actually very easy to do and the internet has quite a few DIY things on how to do this. What I did was take off the last 2 tumblers because the wear out and would snag the key. No problems at all but I imagine it would be easier to steal now.

Anyway - those are pretty inexpensive things you can do first maybe.

I went to the local dealership and had them cut a new key from my VIN number, decided I would give this a try before replacing the ignition cylinder, hopefully it works. It doesn't get stuck all the time, its just aggravating as hell when it happens. I think I will take the door lock cylinder off and try to clean it and see if that might it up some, I've already tried the lube and it didn't budge it. Thanks for the responses.

I did some preliminary research into this also... I bought a wafer kit off a locksmith site and started to look into replacement cylinders (doors, gas cap, air bag) to discover that not all cylinders are re-keyable and getting an actual person who knows if what they are selling was re-keyable was impossible. This project is in development...

This was what I was going to suggest, I hope it works for you. When my truck was about ten years old or so, I had the same problems and a new key cut using the VIN (not a retrace of an existing, old key) solved my problems. It’s sure nice having an old truck without a computerized key..cheap fix!

So I got home last evening with the new key in hand, tried the fuel door first, no problem...put the new key in the ignition, turned it over, fires right up, i let it run, shut it off. I take the new key out of the ignition, put it back in and the damn thing won't budge, i take the new key out put the old key in and she fires right up, shut it off and put the new key in the ignition, try it and she fires right up.

Crazy, by the way the new key from the dealership was $25.00, it's really not that big of an issue because the truck is not a daily driver and I'm not overly concerned about it leaving me stranded somewhere, the key will eventually turn after jiggling it around enough and finding the sweet spot.

The VIN key way wont work for me... my 96 4X4 is a theft recovery with a different VIN assigned by the CHP. No one I have been able to contact can tell me how to find the origianl VIN for parts ordering purposes.

Original VIN is stamped all over the truck. For example under the windshield when you open the hood.

If that doesn’t work you can buy a new ignition, gas tank and door locks from the dealer. I had to that, and set me back about $300. But now I have one key for everything and it has the Toyota symbol on them.

    ^^^ what he said.
To answer your 'tilt wheel' question, a new cylinder/ lock is not an issue.

Get the cylinder and door lock replacement from the stealership and be done with it.

not when they were all removed by the thief... even the "hidden" ones that no one knows about.
