I doubt Toyota prefills the oil filter when they change my Tacoma's oil. They always send the lot boy out to check the mileage again, that's become a running joke. It's on '04 with 66k miles -- no "1" in front.

Now on my slant 6 prefilling the oil filter is not an option, it fits on the oil pump can side up. So you pop in a new filter and 5 quarts of oil into the warm engine and bump the key without touching the throttle so it starts up without the choke, idling at about 500 rpm in park. Then you stare at a big red oil pressure light and wait... and wait... you hear the rods start to knock and wait... the rods get pretty loud while you wait... the rods start to quiet down and you wait... then the oil pressure goes out and the engine is quiet. From their I slowly take the rpm up to around 3000 rpm and slowly let it back down to idle. Shut it down, check the filter for leaks and dipstick for level and call it done. It's normal for more than 100k miles. My Dad's old Plymouth with a slant 6 was the same way.

I saw people bypassing the filter cartridge back on the old SBC 283. I don't know if they did it for performance or if they wanted to save the cost of a new filter.

Dont think oil filters make a rats ass difference...

best thing you can do for your engine ....is change that oil ....alot sooner than what they tell you...

    2K for 4 bangers.....and 3K for v6 ers.......
Only change filter 4th or 5th change....cause the oil is always new.....

I've got the routine down to less than 10min.....$10 in valvoline and $2 in a dash of lucas(6oz).......stubby racket is always on standby with a 14mm in it....right next to the two zerex catch pans......

Only filters I use is K & N racing....and the Napa platinum's......these are built for 'High Bypass'....

This is why I drill and tap my Toyota YZZ-D1 filter each oil change so I can thread in a Fumoto valve and pre-fill the filter with fresh oil without any mess.

Yeah oil today is not same as oil from 60, 70 years ago.....
In the old sae 30 days all the crap in oil would settle out in the pan and leave you with semi-clean oil circulating....
Problem was everything horizon in the engine would also get this coating,,,,,,slime.....

So todays detergent oils are suppose to keep all that crap in suspension.....
do you really want all that crap flowing through you're bearings and passages for 1000's and 1000's of miles.....
changing oil every 6 or 7K seems ludacris to me....especially when oil in 5qt's is so cheap these days.....

And synthetic or conventional doesnt matter, problem is not the oil breaking down....its the crap that builds up in it over time......
The crap comes from blow back and the case vapors reacting with materials at hundreds of degrees.......
And the higher the mpg of the car, the weaker the rings, the greater the blow back.....especially at age.....

well, you tel me...... oil is the most important part of engine maintenance. The old-skool 3000 mile oil change was/is a scam to sell more oil changes. 'Synthetic' oil conversions are also a scam

My 03 Tacoma is original at a happy 340K with everything from the factory 'cept the starter, alternator, water pump and drive shaft & clutch

It's happily worked for me for 340,000+ miles. The 3000 mile oil change is a scam

looks more like an ice cream topping.....

FWIW: The oil in a piston engine is drawn from the sump, the filter will be filled before the sump even sees a loss of oil volume. Pre-filling the filter is a waste of time. :D

Right. Complete marketing tool started by Jiffy Lube back when they started franchising there LOF outlets. Some manufacturers say 5k intervals some say 10k depending on the manufacturer and oil type. Jiffy lube knows there's a million suckers born every minute and built their billion dollar business model on this fact.
