There have been a lot of recent break-ins in my area where people have been smashing car windows and taking anything of value inside. They have been targeting apartment complexes including covered off-street parking with lights hooked up to motion detectors, such as mine, and a car next to where I park had the window smashed last night. Luckily my truck wasn't there, but the police think the burglars might return to raid the rest of the vehicles parked here.

I am going to start bringing things like my faceplate and scangauge inside with me at night, but is there anything else I can do to deter people from smashing the window in the first place, or from stealing anything if they do break in? Do you think mounting my amp under the seat is enough to protect it? I haven't tested how hard you need to yank it to get it loose--it's screwed into the carpet. I also have completely full storage compartments under the backseats. I am worried too about them smashing a shell window to see what goodies I might have in my bed (recovery and emergency gear mostly). Any suggestions? I guess gluing razor blades to everything could get me into trouble...

don't leave anything in sight that indicates you have values in your truck.

there is not a whole lot you can do to prevent a break in if someone wants to break in bad enough. Alarms, and wait outside with a sawed off might help.

    going to be fun!
Funny this topic comes up now!

Two nights ago my 95 lb German Shepherd alerts me to some noise @ 3am as he sticks his cold nose and licks my face when something is not right. So I get up look out the window and see 3 punks looking into car windows out back in the ally way as we have rear load garages.

So, Luger and I go out the front door(townhouse) he is on a 80 foot tracking leash we get within 80-90 feet of the punks I let Luger go knowing he can only go so far.

These punks did not know that he was on that leash when I let him go 2 of the kids ran right into the cops path coming around the corner (I called them 20 minutes before) when he was coming into the neighborhood.

The 3rd kid was found about 15 minutes later when someone called in and reported a person yelling help on a chain link fence because his pants and stomach were caught on the top spike knuckle of the fence....

been having breakins lately in my area too.. this is the time of the year it always spikes. Don't leave anything laying out in view. Most of the people in my neighborhood either left their doors unlocked (WHY WHY WHY) or they left an iPad, purse, or something valuable sitting on the seats or sitting in view. Most thieves wont break into a car unless they know there's something in there worth taking out.

Can't stop a scumbag, only can slow them down. If you really want to be cautious, keep your truck clean and empty at night and leave your glove compartment and center console open so anybody looking in the windows can see that there's nothing to take. This includes your face plate if you have a removable one.

That said, if they want something they can get it. Give them nothing to want and you'll be ahead of the rest.

    enough to go over stuff
My old condo complex had this. Every night for about a month at least two cars were broken into. Eventually the cops set up a sting and caught two crack heads. I went out to my car a few nights that month and slept in my truck. I wanted to catch them so bad. I put a fake security camera behind my truck and some aftermarket alarm window stickers on my truck.

Pair of dirty underwear and socks visible is a good deterrent. Not kidding. When I go hiking and my truck is left in backwoods spots I use this trick. Maybe I've just been lucky but I'mma keep doing it!

My friend leaves her doors unlocked and NOTHING in her car. this way the theives can get in, look around and leave without breaking anything.

I personally cant do this cuz i have 2k worth of car audio, so instead i have an alarm system and have never been broken into.

The burglars are apparently smashing windows without checking for anything valuable in sight. My neighbor woke up to a broken window but nothing missing, and according to police it's a trend. Too many crackheads and not enough crack I suppose.

I would mount a security camera but I suppose the crackheads would steal it. Maybe put a picture of a large pitbull just inside my window? I'm not sure leaving my doors unlocked would be a good idea considering my sound system. It looks like alarms can be had for pretty cheap...

I like the dirty underwear plan. A friend who has traveled a lot said dirty underwear on top in his bag made customs searches a lot shorter.

I'm gonna hang dirty underwear on the steering wheel to air so they can't miss it.
