So i've had this truck since i was 15, for 7 years and at this point i also have a newer car, so i put maybe 1,000 miles a year on it. Basically i just want to keep it as a collectors item i guess, drive it occasionally for fun a bit maybe.

It's pretty much entirely original aside from the 4runner wheels, and a flow master muffler, so i have a few questions about other things.

    1. Would it make sense to replace the entire suspension/steering components at this age? It doesn't have any obvious issues, and i know things like control arms can last forever, but would it make sense to just replace it all for preventative maintenance? If so, any recommendations on brand or price range?

    2. I've never messed with the transmission fluid, differential fluid, transfer case fluid, or flushed or refilled the coolant. (not that it's low) I got the truck from my dad and he had one of those Toyota mechanics that instilled in him the old "don't change the fluid once it's old" line, and seeing as i've only put 45k on it in my time of ownership i've just never messed with it. Is it too late now, or should all of these things be addressed too for longevity? 4WD and transmission seem fine. I realize answers on this will vary based on personal experience, just like to hear more perspectives.

    3. What's the largest size tires that would fit with 16 and/or 17 inch wheels? I'm looking at probably just some newer TRDs, and i think the current tires are like 265/75 A/T Destination's. I like the k02 275/70s as well, but i've also read they don't quite fit, so would it need spacers?

Good looking rig you got there!

I’m in a similar predicament with regards to figuring out a game plan for my truck (also bought from my dad lol). Turns out that it’s really hard to draw a fine line between restore and rebuild (not to mention a laundry list of cool mods). Before spending too much money on “upgrades”, I think it’s important to figure out what you’ll be using it for in 5-10 years.

Personally I’m not a big fan of lifts, unless you build the suspension and drivetrain to handle it. Otherwise, you’re basically throwing Toyota’s engineering plans out the window. Either way, if it’s not gonna be used to crawl then it’s a lot of money just to look cool but to each their own.

With all that said, you should most certainly check and maintain your fluids regularly if you want it to last that long. ESPECIALLY the coolant system.
