So I have a friend who is buying a Toyota Tundra. He is looking at ICON as you don’t have to remove them to adjust. I told him there are too many people on TW that hate ICON, and he should look at other options.
I searched for specific threads with issues and cannot find any.
Toytec is another brand he is looking at.

I know this is fir a Tundra and not a Tacoma, but this is more posted as I said based on what I have read, don’t buy ICON.

Post up your thoughts and experiences with ICON. Any feedback on Toytec would be appreciated as well.

Pretty sure Icon is considered a pretty reputable brand...dont see to many outright unhappy customers. IMHO

We've got both brands on rigs at the shop. Installs went fine, they have both been reliable and ride great. I will say that Icon's machined parts and upper arms are VERY nice. I also like the adjustability of the uppers on the Icons. Toytecs uppers have good adjustability, but I don't love adjusting their balljoint thing. Once it's set it's good though. I actually just installed a Toytec BOSS kit on our new GX460 yesterday. Went smooth, rides great. I also think they are both made in the USA, so that's cool. I think you'd have a hard time finding a bad suspension from the big players.

My suggestion would be to buy on features, price, and brand (if that means anything to you.) Quality is there for both.

I personally wouldn't touch Icons with a 10' pole. Their owner is...we'll say an interesting character. Besides that, on the tech side, they are a digressive shock so handling will be worse than a linear and they suck when it comes to small and big bumps. In short, that means they will ride worse than others...it's generally what you find in cheap shocks. For the same or similar money, he could get in to some Fox or Kings and will have a much nicer shock. If he wants to do some actual reading/research you can send him this Accutune article on digressive vs. linear vs. progressive, it has some good info in it. https://accutuneoffroad.com/articles/digressive-vs-linear-vs-progressive-pistons-shock-valving/

I wouldnt run ICON if they gave me them for free. They do have lots of complaints on this forum ranging from customer service, leaks, failures and a lack of available shops that rebuild them. You’ll also overpay for equal products.

That said most adjustable coilovers can be adjusted on the truck.

    You should add a poll.

I’ve had the stage 10 for close to two years with no issues. Been looking at the 3” kings though

Icon is always brought in to the “top tier” for people when comparing or deciding on suspension, but I think they are there only based on price. People see their prices and unknowingly think they are on par with Fox or King.

    Done.

I didn’t add Kings because they are out of the budget according to my friend. Just as well, had I put them in the poll, I think there would be an overwhelming quantity of that as a selection, when we are trying to sort out which is better in the price range he is looking at.

I am in the same mindset. If I am going to pay some bucks for suspensions components. I'd like to adjust the settings without the need of taking them off.

    I think it’s in the $2000 - $2500 range.

A set of Kings without the adjusters are around $2400 from Headstrong Offroad.

Yeah, I failed to mention this is on a Tundra. I wasn’t getting into specifics as I was just trying to steer him right on quality and how people feel/what I have read about ICON.

Simple search how many negative threads on ICON, then search for King.

By far the most issues I have seen for aftermarket suspension (reasonable use) is for Icons. I see it on here and Instagram.

I am sure there are many many happy Icon owners. But I don't see the same failures or frequency for Fox, Bilstein, or Kings.

    upTOP All the Things!
Both upTOP trucks run full Icon, one on stage 7, one on stage 9 with hydro bump stops. On the stage 9 kit, a faulty shock showed up and Icon was very quick to resolve the issue. In terms of overall ride and feel, we love them, they are great.

The are a digressive shock which means that they are firmer at low speed and softer at high speed, king and fox are the exact opposite.

Take TW with a grain of salt, people love to jump on the bandwagon here. As soon as something gets praised or banned once, it is now the law.

Icons may need to be rebuilt sooner than the competition, maybe not, but when rebuilding you can put in king/fox seals so they are not leaky. well after 40k on one Icon kit and 10k on another Icon kit, we are still riding smooth and happy.

I think King and Fox are linear, not progressive.
