I would like to change the fuel filter on my 2002 Toyota Prerunner, how do I do that?

Is changing the fuel filter a long tedious job or a quick fix?

I can tell you the fuel filter on my 04 pre runner is under the driver seat, not literally, it's still under the truck but under the drivers side seat :D. You have a fastening point or two that secure the housing to the truck and then two nuts that hold the lines in to the fuel filter. Loosen both nuts that secure the fuel lines to the filter, pull the fuel lines out of the old filter, figure the best way to get lines back in to the new filter, then tighten nuts. Highly recommend line wrenches for this type of work.

Have a can or something (not a keg cup) to catch the fuel that will most likely spill.

This is an easy DIY assuming it's the same for an 02.

The filter on my '99 4-banger is NOT under the cab, like the preceding post. Its attached to the side of the
block, under the intake manifold, and difficult to get at. Might be a 4-cyl vs 6-cyl thing.

Make sure to use a flare nut wrench(I think that's called). Got my from autozone for 5 dollars with lifetime warranty. I didn't want to spend 20 dollars for craftsman flare wrench that I will be using for only this specific task. Like some said have a bucket or oil catch. And lastly don't be afraid to muscle the fuel lines out and back in to the fuel filter...

    out....

    :fingerscrossed: good luck

2nd gens fuel filter is in the tank. (Toyota calls them lifetime filters)
Be sure to depressurize your fuel system before opening it up.

the basic answer is that it's pretty easy if you have a v6, and a pretty big pain if you have a 4 cylinder.

OK first post here. I did search and found this thread. I did the swap today on my 04 Prerunner V6. Piece of cake--except when I first laid down and looked up at it, there was no bolt in the retainer clamp. After I put the new filter in, I did my test run to the hardware store for a bolt.
Problem is, none they had threaded in easy and I didn't want to force it without knowing the correct size. I got a 6mmx1.0 to kinda start.
Does anybody know the proper size? I went through all of my mayo jar of bolts, but no luck.

And my mpg declined with the new filter. Only because I keep stomping on it to feel all the new pep it has. :)

Thanks!! Dealer informed me yesterday my fuel filter needs to be replaced, want to tackle it on my own. Question, Will a bad fuel filter decrease performance? Of just affect MPG?

Mine def runs better with new filter. And I was joking about the mpg. Should go up.
I got Wix brand from Orielly
Prob should have stayed Toyota but it was much closer to home.

I've heard wix is best, my truck has been feeling sluggish (even with a supercharger), since the dealer told me my fuel filter needed to be changed I'm wondering if that's the culprit.
