I was just quoted $1000 to have my black OEM bumper to be painted white….

I about fell out of my chair?

    I thought maybe $500, but a $1000?

I’d hate to see how much having the whole truck painted would cost if it ever needed it.

Grab a can of Super White duplicolor and watch some YouTube vids. Might not be 100% but at about 5% of the cost, it could be a viable option. And white is the easiest color to lay down.

    Work in progress...
You can buy the skin pre painted for around 300 bucks and just change it out. It's a fairly easy swap, you'll have to buy new clips for sure.

that's the f-off price. lots of body shops these days prefer to do insurance work only.

If it's front bumper. Time to remove/install, prep, paint/clear. That price is right in line, $800 to 1k.

a black OEM bumper that can be found, like you said, on the SR models. i essentially told him, "That must be the 'price it so high, we don't have to do it' price."

    his reponse:

"It's what it takes to do a proper paint job to the bumpter. Quoted it as if we would quote anything else for anyone else."

    That’s the problem.

It goes deeper than that. But to keep it simple.

Why would a shop take on work and charge less, when they can make more off “insurance”?
It’s all the same in the end, “You” are paying for.
You, me, and the next. We all pay for. Some monthly, some quarterly, some biannual, and others yearly.
But you are paying for it.

Automotive paint jobs are very expensive. When I had mine in the body shop, I think the paint for the passenger side of my truck was $3-4k. Get a second estimate if you don’t like the price.

Easy solution at that cost level: buy a steel rear bumper like RCI and bolt it on. Side benefit is that it’s an actual bumper.

I sometimes wish I could order a truck with flat gray paint, powder coat, or some other coating other than an expensive and fragile clear coat paint job.

Yes, but that would just add to the cost. I’m talking saving money by not getting a factory clearcoat paint job.

Lots of fluff in there... no need to scan the truck, pre and post repair, there was not a collision. no need to prep un-primed bumper, yours is white and finished. no need to pull the headlamps. their labor and material rate is kinda high. in Michigan we are at approx 55-60/hr labor, 34-40/hour for materials. this truly is a customer pay, we dont want to do this job because we are too busy. Please dont try this yourself, unless you have the skill to do it right. if you mess up, you will either have to pay to strip the finishes off and start over, or it will be cost prohibitive... and you will be buying new parts to paint.
