Recussitating a very old thread, I have to say I've thought seriously about installing LSD into my rear end. (Pun intended but don't get the wrong idea) I've had a few instances on ice where it might have prevented an "Oh Jesus moment". Not to mention problems in mud, snow etc.

I'm curious to know why the LSD is better in mud and snow? I have LSD in my yota and unless I have 300lbs of whatever in my bed in the winter I don't move lol

lsd is very helpful on job sites, towing, boat ramps etc... my work trucks have towed/hauled from 100-10k. its nice to get in and out of the job site during construction. guess it depends on what your truck is used for, i can only speak for my work trucks, ive owned 4x4's, 4x2's, chevy, ford, toyota and nissan. best vehicle i used on snow and ice was my AWD bmw it saved my southern A$$ lol!

Okay makes sense, used to use this taco as a work truck too and she never had any issue getting in and out of these Michigan jobsites either and she hauls a boat a lot in the summer

I've never understood why ANY truck with ANY engine/trans. combo came from the factory w/o a limited slip out back.
I've been stuck with 3 wheels on concrete before, that's embarrassing.

This is a pickup truck, where the drive wheels are over the part o the vehicle with the least amount of weight. This translates to very little traction in any condition. But for times with low traction, like rain, or snow, you have essentially 1 wheel drive. And that one wheel spinning isn't getting ANY traction.

Modern trucks have traction control, 1st gens don't.

Posi, lsd's, or lockers aren't just for high power muscle cars who like to leave nice symmetrical burnout marks.

    That is embarrassing, lol.

But the reason most trucks haven't come with LSDs is mostly cost and necessity. If people in pickup trucks were falling off the road all the time, that would be cause to install an LSD in all trucks.

But the fact is, most people who buy trucks, even 4x4s, don't ever leave the concrete jungle where 1 wheel drive is totally acceptable.

I suppose most people don't know what it is. I think EVERY truck needs one.

"Hey man, can you pull closer to the door for the bed?"
"Nah, the ground's uneven. I'll get stuck."

I think every 4x4 should have a winch and steel bumpers, but that's just not in the cards, and doesn't make business sense. Look at the number of TRD Pros (even Rubicons) out there that barely touch gravel roads. That's why they come with things like branded floor mats and sweet looking badges, rather than rock sliders and winches.

It would be nice if it was an optional feature, sure. At least on more modern cars/trucks, it is. Since they can just use software to piggyback off the ABS system, so there is no significant cost increase. With our older trucks having an LSD represents a pretty significant cost increase that most people just don't need.

I see more 4x4 SUVs off in the ditches on the way to the slopes than I do 5 lugs and civics. Recognizing the limits of your vehicle is the best way to not get stuck (which is also in short supply, lol).

I have an '04 and it has electronic locker that I have to turn on when stuck. I would love to make it an automatic. It is on the '04 Pre-runner I have. Was my father's until he passed. I don't know if it was an option for the Pre-runner only though.
