Is this normal? Or bad? my first thought was bad, but I don't know a whole lot about engines, so...

I removed my throttle body today to clean it and the IAC, and I noticed a little pool of motor oil right behind the throttle body. I stuck a rag deep in there and the rag got a fine coating of fresh motor oil. wtf?

I have a pic to attach, but I doubt you can tell anything from it. But you can kind of see the golden glow. I took my finger and ran it across the bottom of the opening, and you can kinda see the track of my finger through the oil. It was a very fine coating...

    Anyone know what this means?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Sure it's motor oil and not just oil from a filter (K&N)?

I think it's normal to have oil there. If it seems like a lot, you should check to make sure your PCV valve isn't stuck open. Or just change it anyway - it's a $5 part.

don't try to clean it unless you take the manifold off to do it, otherwise just leave it alone and it wont hurt anything

for the throttle body cleaning, oil mist gets in it from the pcv valve and its full of black soot from the EGR valve so when these combine it makes a gooey tar like gum in there, mine looked like a stove pipe.

whatever you do don't hit it with carb cleaner or it definitely melts into tar and it will be a royal PITA to get rid of.

scrape it all out dry and after you cant clean it anymore, then use a cleaning solution on it. for the EGR passageway a good tip is use a gun cleaning brush for like 45 to run through that tube, just be sure to remove the temp sensor first.

and get all new gaskets, FYI most times the EGR gaskets (2) need to be ordered and aren't kept in stock
