I DID NOT "fill my gas tank" and 24 hours later the dash says empty.

I did not put gas in the tank!






I filled up yesterday, I have driven about 15 miles since. When I went out this evening the truck said I had 24 miles left and the needle points to almost empty. The only thing I did was install front door Kicker speakers, non-JBL headunit, this afternoon (do it, a big difference that the puny stockers).
I do not have a locking gas cap. I crawled under the truck to look and feel if there was a hole in the tank and didn't find one. I have not filled it up to find out if there is a leak or an electrical problem. I removed the battery negative for over 15 minutes and nothing changed. I have not looked for any codes, there is no CEL.

Ideas?

Can you show us where the dash is on your truck?

 

I have not filled up to see what the level is now.
Edit: My credit card isn't showing a charge at the pump.

I may have not filled up.

 

Just go pump and see if any gas will enter. If its full then maybe some level sensor went bad.

 

get on the side of the bed and push back and forth so the struck rocks and shakes to see if it pops the sensor back

 

That did cross my mind. This is the second gasoline fckup in my life this year.

I drove it 5 miles out, partially on a dirt road, and back since the light went on.

 

Got a tank of bad gas in the wife's '00 TJ Wrangler in the winter.

 

I called the cops once because I thought someone shot towards my truck and put a hole in the gas tank. Later on I saw the holes they also drilled in my locking gas cap. Looks like they tried that and then went for the gas tank. … well it looked like a bullet hole to me!

 

and just so you know.....
you can go around 30 miles PAST zero because Toyota thinks we can't be trusted and has almost 2 gal left usable in the tank at empty...
(They say its a safety factor)

 

I've seen false readings after parking, or even driving on steep inclines. All of the gas goes to either the front or rear of the tank depending on which end is downward. The sensors think the tank is empty. I've had it happen to me twice in another vehicle. Both times I had to drive about 30 minutes after getting back on fairly level ground before the fuel gauge and DTE readout were accurate.

Granted that wasn't with a full tank. Both times I had roughly 1/2 tank of fuel when I got false readings. It happened the 1st time after driving up Pikes Peak in CO, and more recently after driving up Mt. Washington in NH.

FWIW, its almost impossible to siphon fuel out of the tank from the filler on newer vehicles. That's why people are now drilling holes in the tank.

 

Just by chance you set the handle to fill it up automatically and it clicked,stopped and never pumped gas.You think it was on full and infact you didn't get any gas as this may be why your card was never charged. I bet you are still on empty.

 

So I’m guessing while you were out running your errands , you possibly stopped at the dispensary before the fuel stop ? It happens …
