I can’t tell if my 2022 SR has the tow package.

I’m seeing a lot of conflicting information about this on threads. And my 2022 CPO Tacoma SR (4x4 V6) is my first truck so I’m not very familiar yet with towing. My SR has a hitch receiver, but it does not have that external mini transmission cooler that I’m reading about. But also, when I type in the vin, it doesnt read that it comes with a tow package. So I don’t know if the previous owner installed it? Can someone provide some clarity, please? Trying to figure out the actual tow capabilities. Thank you!

If it has the 4/7 pin dual trailer outlets next to the license plate, it has the tow package.

Starting somewhere in the 20-21 model years the external trans cooler was phased out on all trims. All that did was create a mild wave of paranoia, but ultimately did not harm towing performance.

    LOL.

OP, AFAIK, there is no such thing as a tow package anymore. It's now standard equipment and has been that way since I'm not sure.

In any case, anything with a hitch can tow.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

If you have the combination 4/7 pin plug like the one below the truck has the tow package.

If your trailer is heavy enough to require electric brakes you will need to add a brake controller, there is a plug in the driver's side kick panel, you just need to buy the appropriate adapter cable for plug & play.

I don’t think there are a lot of V6’s that don’t have the towing package, the tell will be if the spot next to your license plate has the 7 and 4 pin connectors, like someone else mentioned.

My 2019 does have it, including the trans cooler in front of the radiator, but I’ve heard that it doesn’t do much in the grand scheme of things.

@RustyGreen can you elaborate on this plug, maybe a picture? Thanks!
Edit: plug by drivers side kick panel?

    Some reading: https://www.tacomaworld.com/forums/towing.34/

The other advice given for towing is to use S4 (not S-mode 5 or 6, or D). ECT if you have it. Towing needs higher revs, and allowing shifting into 5 or 6 allows down-revs.

Did not know they phased it out. About to relocate my cooler on the 15.

Also, tow package has bigger alternator, can't remember the spec.ATM.

If its V6 it can tow, you have a hitch, just buy a ball. By driver side door, check the label and see how much it can tow.

100 amp vs 130 on the tow. All 3rd gen 6-bangers should come with the 130.

mid-cycle of the '20 model year toyota made the switch. I was lucky enough to be one of the first with no external cooler.

Since the MY2018 all V6 Taco's get the tow package as standard.

Only the pre-TSS '16 and '17 V6 Taco's can be found without it and I imagine those are pretty rare.

@caribe makaira posted it for us.

It is easy enough to take the kick panel off (depending on your agility level) the plug is buried in the collection of wires.

Just be patient and move them around - like that old commercial for spaghetti sauce "it's in there". ;)

Had this ripped apart for remote start install. Wondered what that was for. I had read bedlights but my sr isn't prepared. Perfect! Good to know for the near future.
