Well, I let this post sit over night while I relaxed from my frustration.
TL: DR: Looking for advice on where I messed up with HyperDip.

I went and Plastidiped my fender flares a few weeks ago. After hesitation and skepticism, I researched and found HyperDip, which seemed to be the best I could get. Or at least it was supposed to work fine!
I painted the fenders following instructions, 4 light coats and then probably 6 coverage coats. I let them dry/cure for over two weeks before I put them on the truck. I have had great experience with spray paint in the past so I figured I knew what I was doing.

The “tackiness” was almost non existent so I figured they were pretty good and cured but during the install, I got some dirt on a fender and went to wipe it off with a rag. Even with light pressure the damn thing started peeling! Just to make sure I wasn’t crazy, I grabbed some glass cleaner and a shop rag and lightly tried cleaning another one, and it peeled as well! I mean the entire paint job is as fragile as tissue paper. I am extremely disappointed in this product and likely will rip it all off. And no way in hell do I feel comfortable going through a car wash, despite videos claiming you could.

But it would be ignorant to just blame it on the product. I can assume I must have done something wrong. Any idea what I could have done wrong? Anybody had similar experiences? Were all the testimonials fake and this is a crap product or did I seriously mess this up in the application.

At this point I don’t think I’ll ever try to plastidip something ever again. It was a ton of work just to save a bit of cash.

What did you do for prep work before applying? It sounds like there was wax or some kind of residue that prevented any adhesion.

I got the truck washed, then removed the fenders and thoroughly washed them by hand with dish soap and a sponge to hopefully get off any oils or such. I wash the car regularly but never wax it, so I was hoping that would do the trick!

I gave it about 30 minutes between each coat, which YouTube said was more than enough! The paint was dry to the touch each time. I was surprised that the instructions from the company allowed for such quick recoat times, but hey, their product, their instructions! You think that could have messed it up?

The stock fenders have too much of a smooth surface for it to adhere well too. Unless you sand it and give it a rough surface to grab onto, you won't get any good adhesion with paint or plastidip.

On top of sanding, clean with rubbing alcohol. It won't risk leaving residue that will again, not help with adhesion

Yeah I didn’t want to sand because I wanted the option to remove it if need be…I think I’m surrendering and I’m gonna rip it off. I’ll just pay for new fenders if I really want the black. This will probably be my one and only attempt at plastidip
