Not sure I'm going to do this justice and it's only happened once that I'm aware of. So I'm not too concerned yet.

Today, I was sitting in a parking lot with the truck on, transmission in D, and the E-Brake engaged.

As I was sitting there for maybe 40 seconds, a massive bang came from what sounded and felt like under the hood. It was very noticeable as it shook my steering wheel, pedals, and cabin. It sounded like something literally hit the hood or another body panel because of the sound it made. When the bang happened, the truck jumped almost like I was rear ended.

I got out and checked around the truck and didn't see anything noticeable or concerning. I checked under the hood, but again everything looked normal.

Just for context, I had the vehicle in last week for recalls on fuel pump and a couple electronic pieces.

Has anyone else experienced a random massive bang and jump in similar conditions? Any ideas on what it could have been or things I should check?

Edit: People asking why I was in D with the E-brake engaged. It's because I was in a line of cars that moved often.

    Yeah.
Were you driving it in 4WD at all prior to this?

Maybe you should create a survey.

Was the engine at idle when this happened? Why would you be sitting there in D with E-brake engaged?

The idle was normal. I was waiting in a short line that moved often and didn't feel like going back and forth in gears.

were you "sitting in a parking lot" or driving in a line that moved often with the ebrake engaged in D? Does you e-brake still work?

I was in a parking lot with a short line of cars that moved often. I disengage Ebrake before moving of course. This was at a stop mind you.

    Yes, ebrake is fine...

Had the truck been sitting over night after washing it? Might be the brakes froze up?

    Great question,
No wash and I am in SoCal where it's damn near 90-95 every day.

    Thanks!

You’re not supposed to be in drive with the e brake on wtf that’s what the brake pedal is for.

Weird crusade that's going on here. I use the ebrake to hold my place in the drive through all the time. No it doesn't hurt the transmission.

The bang is weird. My first guess is that you got hit by something and didn't notice it. :cookiemonster:

This is a thing people do? Using the parking brake while in a slow moving line of cars? To what end? I don’t see the purpose. Maybe some other unusual habits are the cause if the bang.

Same, in my simpleton brain if the car is stopped there's no damage to be caused by having the E-brake engaged no matter what gear I'm in. But what do I know, I'm just some idiot on the internet looking for information and reaching out to the community.

There was nobody behind me and the car in front had already left, which is why I don't think I was hit, and the bang seemed to have come from under the hood area. No noticeable leaks, no smoke, everything looked "normal".

But who knows, maybe it was a ghost car

If you didn’t have the normal foot brake engaged, which I assume you didn’t or else why use the ebrake, I wonder if your ebrake somehow temporarily failed, which would cause the truck to lurch forward. Otherwise, no clue.
