Hub Centric? What are yall talking about?

I have a new to me Taco, loving it so far, and am on the hunt for some 20's and 33's. One question i have though is what the deal is with hub centric and not hub centric? From what i know 1/2 ton chevy wheels can fit a taco but it seems like there is a little more to the story.

Also, could anyone post what specific vehicles have the same bolt pattern and "hub centric" design as a taco? there are lots of different posts claiming certain other models having the same pattern but have never seen a complete list in one post.....

Perhaps a post about this would help others like me that dont know what they're talking about too......

 

From what I understand the center hole of a wheel fits perfectly over the protruding part of the hub. Meaning the Hub assists in centering the wheel. If its lug centric then the lug nuts center the wheel. I may be wrong but this is what I've come up with after researching this topic. How big the center cap hole has to be on the Toyota hub centric, I don't know, maybe around 3".

Some Chevy wheels have the same bolt pattern as 6 lug Toyotas but they may not be hub centric since the center cap hole might be bigger.

There are also hub centric adapter rings for wheels that have a larger bore.

Our wheels all have a centerbore of 106.1mm for a nice snug fit on the hub. This helps to eliminate a lot of vibration issues that a lot of folks have with aftermarket wheels. The wheel is easily centered on the hub and when you couple that with conical lugs, the fitment is very precise.

Our 6-lug Toyota trucks all have a 106mm hub size. A lot of aftermarket wheels have a centerbore of 108mm or larger so that it's a "one size fits all" type of deal. A wheel that would fit a Tacoma would then also fit a Nissan or GM truck. For the most part, they won't fit snug like a factory wheel.

 

If i would have just popped my wheel off i would have understood this right away. Did my brakes yesterday and was like DUH the wheel rests right on this hub!

That is very helpful !!! I to now understand. Thank you for the info !! That explains why I had vibration issues in the pasted... Question, I'm looking at an after market wheel that has a 106.2 center bore is that too big and will that cause it to vibrate ?

 

I would assume that your chances are better than having wheels that have a 108-110mm center bore. For the most part, I would say that you'll be OK. Just get a good wheel/tire balance and torque them down properly. If the lug bores are large enough for ET lugs, pay a little extra and use them as well.

As far as aftermarket wheels, if you like them and the price is right for you, go for it. This is any wheel brand/design in general that I'm speaking about.
