    hello all,

I am liking to purchase my first Tacoma, but am set on the short bed.

Is there a character in the vin or a feature that could help me determine this?

Here is a photo of the one I'm looking at

    All of them
All access cabs will be considered long bed.
They only come in the 6ft bed unless they have been cut an bobbed

Okay, just so I understand, the Tacoma has a 5ft bed, but is considered to be long because of the extra space created by not having the double cab?

Access cabs have the long bed bed which is 6ft I believe. The short bed on the double cabs is 5ft.

When it comes to 2nd gen Tacomas, there are two bed lengths - 5ft and 6ft. The 5ft is referred to as the short bed and the 6ft is referred to as the long bed.

Regardless of the trim package, the Access Cab only comes in a 6ft bed, aka long bed.

Double cab TRD Sport & SR5 come with either a 5ft or 6ft.

Double cab TRD Off-roads only come with a 5ft short bed.

Double Cabs come in a short (5 ft) or long (6 ft) configuration.

Access cabs ONLY come in a long (6 ft) configuration.

An access cab is the same overall lengths as a short bed double cab, it just has an extra foot in the bed and a foot less in the cab.

The double cab long bed is a foot longer than an access cab because it has the extra foot in the cab and the bed.

Tacomas either have a short (5ft) or long(6ft) bed on all 4-doors, double cabs, crew cabs, whatever you want to call them.
They ONLY have the 6 foot beds in the Access Cab/extended cab model.
The truck you are looking at and all Access cabs will have a 6 foot bed.

I would think cab style to be far more important than a shorter bed. What is your reason for only wanting a 5 ft bed, vs a Acess cab w/ 6'?

I have never seen a access or regular cab with anything except for the 6' bed. I am guessing you had a dumb parts guy.

Easiest way to tell a long bed from a short bed from a distance is there is no space between the fender flare and the cab in the short bed, and also the long bed wheel well is more centered on the side of the bed.

FWIW the shell shown in the OPs pic is for a regular cab, not for an access cab.
