So my paint on my 06 looked good for its age and had no issues. Well today i went to wash it at a spray and wash place and while drying noticed a few inch wide spot on the lower door where the clear coat just came off. This is new since I wash my truck frequently.

What would be the best approach to this?

Auto body shop to have it properly repaired.

Once this starts it doesn't stop. If you are lucky it could just be that door.

    Post up some pictures...

Hope it doesn't cost too much. Theres a small round spot on the roof also but it was like that when i bought it and hasn't gotten any bigger. This spot just came off in one big piece. Ill try and get some pictures up.

This happened on my 2006 Red taco. I had the roof, hood and fender flares repainted last year. Like they say once it starts it is about impossible to stop. A short term solution is to remove the loose clear coat and spot or touch up the spots. I have had decent success with this method though I know it is just buying me some time before I have to get it painted. Another thing...mine was sin the sun and outside for most of it's life and now it lives in the garage and seems to be doing much better. Good Luck!

Suggest to stop using a power washer on the cars finnish. Suggest to get some car soap, and brush. Along with water and a garden hose.

There was a rock chip at the top and i think the pressure washer might of done it. Now i know heres a picture of the spot

the roof isn't like this it looks more of just a small faded spot.

Primer paint protects the metal, paint makes the car look pretty, and clear coat protects the paint.

Out of curiosity did you look at the picture? The video will fix that chip and I've done that on most of the truck but the peeling clear coat under that chip is a whole different task.

It's paint not brain surgery. You can clean the area, and apply paint. Had a salesman tell me one time everything in life is biodegradable. Personally I can buy a new truck instead of a use one. I chose to purchase a used one, cause I'd be paranoid about someone ding or keying it. Besides my wife drives it daily to a dog park for the dogs, it's a truck.

Ya im not super paranoid about it and i understand she's 10 years old. But in turn I do like to keep it looking as new as possible even though i wheel it often. I was spraying off mud from this weekend when it happened. And I remember getting close with the pressure washer in that specific spot.

2nd Gens with a solid colors as your does not have factory clear coat over the paint.

Only the metallics have a clear, That being said, I'm confident your truck has been worked on prior to your ownership.

Yes, that is a solid color. Toyota factories add a clear "into" the solid paints, but not over it like you thought.

I feel for you. Has you vehicle been worked on in the past? I bought a truck off a guy who claimed everything was original but it turned out, the entire passenger side had been re-painted. Once the clear started failing in one area, the rest quickly followed and now the right side of the truck looks horrible. A local body shop quoted $2500 just to fix one side...another quoted me 5K for the whole thing and a Line-X dealer quoted me $1800 to Line-X the whole truck.

Just curious- do you know the history of the vehicle as far as compounding/polishing goes? Do you think that had anything to do with it?

the car fax stated the rear had a fender bender but minor damage. I suppose the side could of been jacked up and fixed also. You can never really know when buying a used car.
