I have an oak tree stump about 3 foot in diameter that i need to rot the stump. A stump grinder is not something I have nor do i want to pay to have done. I don't want to burn it out either. So I would appreciate tried and true ways using chemicals and methods. Thanks.

I had a large maple stump that I just hand dug around it as deep as I could . About 4-5 inches down then cut it as low as I could get the chain saw and covered it with topsoil then planted grass on it . Its been around 5 years and you would never know there was a tree there !

chemicals take forever. Grind or burn.. I had one about 1 foot that was dead that wasnt gone in 2 years even using chemicals.

You can drill holes and pour in some stump remover.

That link in your quote from @Sig45 tells you how to burn and how to ROT a stump out. Let me make it easier for you, though reading is still involved.
    Copied from the link:
"How to Rot a Tree Stump
[IMG]Below you will find step-by-step directions on how to rot a tree stump yourself as well as a list of materials. Before you get started it’s also a good idea to keep in mind the following tips: You can speed up the rotting process by using a high-nitrogen source like potassium nitrate. You can also try natural sources of nitrogen like blood meal, fresh manure or compost.

Materials Needed to Rot a Stump
    • Drill with a one-inch spade bit or other wood-boring bit
    • Eight to 10-inch extender for the bit
    • Potassium nitrate, blood meal, fresh manure or compost
    • Plastic scoop or garden trowel
    • Bucket of hot water
    • Cup with spout or a funnel
    • Shovel

Step-by-Step Directions for Rotting a Stump
    1. Drill holes into the stump using the spade bit and extender. The holes should be eight to 10 inches deep and drilled at a 30-degree angle.
    2. Use the plastic scoop or trowel to fill the holes full of your high-nitrogen substance.
    3. Dip your plastic cup with a spout into the bucket of hot water. Pour water into each hole. Alternatively, you can insert a funnel into each hole and pour water in directly from the bucket. Keep pouring until the nitrogen source is either dissolved or soaked.
    4. Use your shovel to chip off pieces as the stump gradually softens. When the stump is gone, fill the hole with dirt as needed."

Rock salt all over it, drill holes in it to help speed up the process.

get a shovel and dig it out. it ain't rocket science.

if you are looking for the easy way out --or have a lot of stumps--
then fork the cash over for a grinder

I attempted to rot out a tree stump 2 years ago, it was about 2 feet across, I used a 1" bit to drill holes 12" deep into the core of the stump. Drilled probably 20 holes in total. Then I used Hi-Yield stump removal. It is looks almost like lawn fertilizer, poor it into the holes and then fill the holes with water to desolve the compound into the stump. It definitely helped, but after 6 months the stump was still there.

Ultimately I paid to have a guy come out and grind the stump down. He took it 6" below the surface and then I just racked up all the mulch, put topsoil down and put down some seed. now it's perfect. it only cost me $60 on a guy on craigslist to have it ground down.

I paid $40 for the drill bit and probably another $30 on the Hi-Yield....

Burning the stump is the cheapest and most effective way to get rid of it...

+1 for tannerite. Proven both more effective and more fun than burning!
