Neighbor has a 2009 Tacoma (the 6 cyl) and the engine oil cap is so tight nobody has been able to loosen it by hand. Anyone have ideas for busting it loose?

smack it on the top lightly, use a fat rubber dish washing glove with a pipe wrench.

Place the raised part of the filler cap along the inside of the jaws of the channel locks ^ and unscrew using the handles as a lever. Had to do this several times before I started changing my own oil. People were putting the 710 cap on too tight.

Bingo. I use these every oil change, I don't actually grip down on the filler cap though, I just use these to get it nice and loose. ;)

It's not worth removing if it's stuck; tell your neighbor to buy a new one or at a minimum a new engine is needed.

You could try to heat things up around the cap, but most likely the end of the thread has a crack or otherwise.

Get a spare, they are cheap, then go to brute force.

What I dont understand is grown adults cant unscrew plastic oil cap from a metal engine head.

There is always stuff around you can use for more leverage.

There is a plastic tube it's not directly screwed into engine block. Channel locks or even try heating a little with heat gun.

When you tighten it up (hand tight) heat makes the plastic expand .. I usually let the engine warm up before an oil change and it's pretty hard to get off .. also I'm buff as shit

It's all leverage. Secure oil (710) cap, turn Tacoma.

    Done.

Really, it was a serious question, I couldn't figure out how the thing got so goddamn tight.

    Suggesting
"When you tighten it up (hand tight) heat makes the plastic expand .. I usually let the engine warm up before an oil change and it's pretty hard to get off .. also I'm buff as shit"

    Telling me this:
"There is a plastic tube it's not directly screwed into engine block. Channel locks or even try heating a little with heat gun."

    and suggesting good old
    [IMG]

Did the trick. Just bought the truck. Had NO IDEA that ANY Yota would ever need channel locks for an oil change.

But. WHATEVER. It worked fine using the handles for leverage.

Seems like Yotas have gotten a lot more complex and a lot more stupid since my last truck, which was a 96.

So yes, real thread, real laughs.

Just sent the SO to get me a spare 710 cap :D
