Depends. If you don’t want to save it, cut it out. If you are talking about the large wire bundle you probably need to take the wires out to get more room to compress it.

Why do you need to remove it?

I would like to run some wires through the firewall for lights, amplifier etc. I don't want to drill so if there is a better way than that grommet lemme kno :)

i took a metal coat hanger and just punched it through (engine side) with the amp wired tied to the other end. Found it under the dash and pulled it through.

You can push a significant amount of wire through the existing grommets. The lights should be going through relays so the wire can be light gauge. There is ample room for the wire(s) to drive an audio amp & system.

You referring to the main grommet on on the driver side or the other grommets?

Absolutely no need to remove anything, just punch thru, you can easily get a 4ga bundle in there.

OP: I know you were shown the right way to do this, but for anyone considering it, never remove grommets! You’ll :bananadead: it when the sharp metal sides of the firewall cut into your wires from road vibrations. Always poke holes through grommets when running wires through sheet metal holes!

Trust me, watched a Ram burn because of this.

Just to make sure I understand. When you mean punch thru, you mean poke a hole through the grommet? Also did you use the main grommet here ( with the huge bundle of wires), or another grommet?

If possible, feed the wires through the existing hole, otherwise poke a hole through the grommet right next to the existing hole.

Yeah the main grommet right under the wheel. I just popped thru with the wires I was running and an old radio antenna for the fish.

This or drill... forcing a few wires through the current one not only looks like crap but also runs the risk of hitting the harness. A 3/4 grommet will easily get 6-10 wires, maybe even more.

if it helps, there is another small grommet almost behind/next to the brake master cylinder pump on the drivers side (Big round tortilla warmer thing, forgot name of it) about the size of a quarter.
I ran my light bars wire thru that as the large wire grommet was hard to punch through.

Post a picture of what you are looking at. But yes the main grommet driver side. Note there was a unused orphan hole on the bottom of the main bundle.

I used Windex as a lubricant to push additional wires through with the “existing” wires in the grommet. No cutting or drilling was necessary.

If you need to run BIG wire, you can run it through a PEX plenum, under the cab, cut an appropriate size hole in the floor of the cab, install a cable bladder, run your cable through that bladder, then tighten the bladder to seal the hole/cable. Fuse the cable at the battery end.

No need to cut, drill, or destroy anything, just use the factory provided sleeves (boots) thru the fire wall, clip the blank tip, run wire and securely tape to remaining boot.
