I know there's a lot of strong feelings for and against the TSS-P stuff -- I don't aim to debate the merits of the system.

I'm considering buying a 2018 Tacoma TRD Off-road (manual) as a first-time truck buyer. What's holding me back is I can't determine a good method for disabling the entire suite of TSS-P (Pre-collision, pedestrian detection, auto high beams, etc.). Is it possible to simply unplug the radar in the grill and unplug the forward vision camera? I gather it'll generate a warning on the dash, but if that's all it does, I can live with that.

Any ideas for a more elegant hack would also be welcome. Modifying the firmware?

Why pay for it and don’t use it? I wouldn’t mess with all that- too many potential computer issues; your displays will be really all screwy and not readable with screen-wide alerts and lights, and your computer and safety systems warranties may be voided if Toyota knows you disconnected them.

Get a lightly used 2017 pro, a lot more truck for the money and no TSS-P stuff. And welcome!

Oh yeah, avoid future disappointment by really making sure it’s a Pro, even if Carfax and the seller say it is - I won’t go into why here...

Just turn them off. Or turn the setting down. If you’re unsure how, go take a test drive and have dealer show you. You’re overthinking it.

They’ll do that? Have a 2017, so wasnt sure. He should get a ‘17 Pro though, and go with the bro’s, you know? :)

Almost all the TSS features can be turned off or dialed down in sensitivity. I forget they are on until I back in my driveway. I keep the beep on because I don’t want to run over a dog or kid. They don’t play by the rules

I think just about anything else would be more efficient, and much less expensive, as a deterrent to any threat. Maybe you have one those fancy Tacoma’s from the commercial that is Untameable, or just have expensive taste in what you’re willing to ruin over a perceived threat. :D

You cant turn off the pre-collision entirely. It will always brake if the conditions call for it. You can permanently disable the lane watch assist and you can use regular cruise control.

If you don’t mind me asking why do you want to turn it off? I’ve had literally zero problems with it for months after tuning down lane departure. Adaptive cruise control is actually pretty nice.

It seems that most people that complain about safety sense haven't actually tried it. Good example, OP is asking how to disable a feature on a truck he doesn't actually own and I have the impression he hasn't actually driven it.

I don't have safety sense in my truck but have driven a couple of Corollas and Camry's with it. The system is not as intrusive as most people think.

Had a rental Corolla a few weeks back with the adaptive cruise. It was incredible. That combined with the lane keeping steering assistance deal...money!

My tacoma is indeed untamed lol!

Here in the US this is not a problem, but I come from a country in south america where roadblocks, assault, car jacking, kidnapping etc was thing, especially during night travel. We regularly went from remote areas to the city. (shrimp farm)

TSS-P could get you killed over there if you try to purposely run an assailant over or ram the back end of a pickup to get passed a road block. And yes this happened lol.
These tacomas front ends seem to be made of paper mache so not sure the old ram the road block would work lol.

Thank god we live in the good ole US where this never crosses our minds.

Don’t you ever take that Untameable cement M/T Pro out of this country!
Sounds like my neighborhood in the 90s. But not as crazy as S. America. Glad you’re here now and out of that danger!
