On tight budget. Truck has 200,000 miles. Want to change coolant soon. Thought I'd take a look at the water pump before I do it. Do not want to replace pump unless necessary. What exactly should I be inspecting on the pump once I have it out?

no sure fire way to inspect

back off the tension on belt wiggle front shaft for play

most pumps goin south will leak a little............leak a lot

test the presure cap b4 changing out fluid

under normal environs a healthy pump will provide good pressure

unfortunately it can go at any time

Only thing I’d add is to get a good light and inspect every little nook&cranny for the leaks. I didn’t have any noticeable warnings before mine went out. First indication was the temp gauge rising when the housing cracked.

It happened during the winter so looking back I think the short heating/cooling cycles of the engine from quick trips in single digits might’ve played a role.

Ok, I edited since I lack the ability to read. You change the WP with the timing belt job. If you notice coolant leaking from the area or that the truck is beginning to over heat, then it's time to do that job. It's recommended every 90k miles, which at 200k, it's close to time if it hasn't been done. Most the time there is a sticker on the timing cover that says when the last time it was done. If not, I'd default to that it hasn't been done.

Does the weep hole on the bottom have any 'tracks' of coolant?

Does the shaft have any play?

    Yes to either suggests changing.

If unknown then replacement is needed. Buy the timing belt / water pump kit. Comes with everything needed.
