I need some advice from you experienced manual drivers.
What's the proper technique to get moving from a stop in deep snow or mud?
Do I simply just ride the clutch until I get moving?
Should I be holding a certain RPM while letting out the clutch?
    Any help would be appreciated.
And yes I'm fairly new to driving a manual transmission.

Rock it back and forth - riding the clutch is not a good thing ever. You can slowly let it out until you feel the transmission receiving power and goose it a little once the friction plate’s pressed against the flywheel.

4WD - ensure you can build momentum and let out clutch as soon as you have speed and can match engine revs. and wheel rotation (= Slip as little as possible).

If very slippery, don’t shift, just maintain momentum with steady revs at 3-4+K rpm (where the power is…) as needed until you reach an area with good traction.

Depending on the situation, starting off in second gear can help.

The quality of your tires also plays a very important role while driving in deep snow . If you live in the snow belt , I highly suggest using winter tires .
As mentioned , using 4x4 gives your truck a mechanical advantage as the weight of the engine over your front tires pull you out of the snow rather than just using the rear tires that push you .
A good set of winter tires will change the way the truck functions on snow and ice followed by some weight over the rear axle .
Up in the great white north , insurance companies give you yearly discounts for using winter rubber

I'm far from a pro when it comes to driving in snow, however the couple of times I've found myself 'stuck' in an un-plowed driveway (the one at the cabin my family owns in the mountains comes to mind) I use 4Low to get me out to the plowed street then bump into 4HI. If it were really bad I'd probably engage the rear locker as well, at least until I got moving.

My favorite snowed-in driveway story; in my previous 4wd I drove to my family's cabin on a snowy day. When I arrived there was a light dusting of snow on the cement where I parked. A couple of hours after I arrived I went to leave to get dinner and found that I appeared to be stuck. In maybe an inch of snow. 4Low got me out but I was curious what happened. Closer inspection revealed that my warm tires had melted into the ice and essentially 'frozen' me to the concrete LOL!

If you're truly stuck use 4Lo.

Trying to get moving in second may be beneficial. This is true no matter 2wd or 4wd.

Rock it if you can.... This is especially easy in a manual. Forward in gear and then rock back in neutral.

Don't gun it. That will just bury your further.

Clearing mud, dirt, snow, whatever if you're buried to the diff or the frame can help a ton as well.

4lo, 2nd gear, ease out on the clutch. Maintain traction to get going.

In snow and on ice you want to be smooth and even with throttle and clutch. In other words don't gun it but wheel spin is ok if you are moving and maintaining momentum until you get to a spot with a better grippier surface.

You s/b already in 4LO and just use the clutch cancel button while turning the key to slowly crawl out without revving or jerking.

Get a pull from someone, and save your clutch. For experienced drivers with a manual usually rocking it back and forth works.

    Exactly this.

The enemy in snow/mud is a lack of friction - you don't have enough of it between your tires and the ground to get you moving enough to get out of whatever hole you've dug yourself into, and so you have to find a way to build momentum to get out.

This is my usual approach - start in 4HI, probably 2nd gear. Gently ease the clutch out and try not to slip the tires. Go until you can't any more, then pop it into reverse and back up, adding the force of your reversing to whatever the truck gets from rolling back. Do that until you can't go back any more. The idea here is that you can go forward and back and build some momentum to climb out of whatever hole you're in. Probably butchered it in my explanation, but oh well.

I don't understand why people are suggesting 4LO - it just gets you more torque at the wheels and makes it more likely that you'll just spin your wheels.

It only has as much torque as you give it. I find it's a lot easier to manage your gearing and clutch in 4Lo.

It you're just popping the clutch and givin'er in 4Lo then you are definitely correct.

"Stuck" is a pretty dynamic term. Any number of approaches can be the best. Including 4Hi or 4Lo.

Fair enough. For me, when I'm trying to manage traction, I find it easier to do in a higher gear. Lower gearing just makes the throttle touchier and more likely to break traction.

That said, if I were stuck on a hill and knew I needed some climbing ability as soon as I got myself free, then 4Lo would be the way to go.

Public insurance in MB will finance winter tires for you but don't give you a discount.

As others have mentioned, release the clutch and keep wheel slippage down by using light throttle. It may be helpful to turn off Traction control so engine power isn't cut.

Slow and steady wins the race on ice.

Deep soft powdery snow, wheel speed and momentum.

Go find a place to practice. Have some fun. Bring a friend just in case you get stuck.
