    Hello everyone!

So I am fairly new to off roading, done a few outings, try to read up a lot on here, but there's something I have not seen discussed: getting out of mud. What techniques do people use, before digging/winching/pulling?

The only thing I know of is turning your front wheels back and forth, I assume this is trying to get traction?

Do you want to drive slow and try and get grip or spin your wheels to fling mud out of the tread?

Should one rock back and forth?

I suppose I am asking both for general knowledge and my own circumstances, unfortunately I do not have a locker yet.

    Thanks for any advice!

Driving through it you want to keep tire speed up to clear out the tread. If you lose momentum and get stuck stop and don’t dig yourself deeper. Once you’re stuck, depending on the mud and terrain you might be able to dig out or use traction boards. Otherwise you’ll have to winch or get a tug out.

I would probably try a few turns of the wheel with light throttle to see if I get lucky and grab traction, but you don't want to dig in deeper which is what will likely happen if you try it too much. Once you're stuck and you can't go forward or back out, like mentioned above, you really gotta focus on digging out or getting pulled out so you don't make it worse

Thanks! I think in the past I was going too slow worried about breaking traction, which led to me getting stuck. Being new, I knew about keeping my tread clean but did it all wrong. After I got stuck, I spun my wheels forwards and back, probably digging myself deeper and not going anywhere

Thank you! The two real times I got stuck, I had water coming in through my doors so I was panicking a little, and it was too deep to dig. I probably made it worse by spinning my wheels and digging deeper

Easiest way to get out of mud is never to get into mud. Mud sucks. Mud is the enemy. Mud will suck the pride out of even the most well built trucks.

Man, sometimes I feel like the only person who loves the mud. Part of me wishes I had something like a 2500/3500 diesel on boggers, but I love my Taco. But 9 times out of 10, I'd rather be slipping and sliding through mud than crawling over rocks or God forbid getting out of sand. I hate sand

I used to love mud. Then I discovered the maintenance that comes with mud. A muddy Saturday on my mountainbike meant that Sunday was spent stripping it down to the frame and repacking the suspension, crank, head, and wheel bearings. Tearing it apart was a wake up call on how far those little grains can penetrate and the damage they do, even in sealed cartridges. After a year or two of doing that I decided mud wasn't nearly as fun as it used to be.

Oddly enough it took a few additional years to make the connection that gee, maybe my truck would need the same attention as my bike after a muddy day. :anonymous:

Tacos aren't great for mud, you really need big tires and mega torque/wheel speed.

I agree with everyone, if you get stuck, stop.

We have clay below the surface here and its fucking awful. I won't intentionally go through mud unless I have a butt load of speed.

Best way is to let someone else go first.

And if you are running tires designed mainly for the road, don't. [that places the OEM tires into the ''don't'' category]

I'm trying to get 33s but yeah, I definitely need more power. I also don't have a locker sadly

Unfortunately I like to be the hard charger lol. This has led to some less than optimal situations... As for tires, I'm running 265 Wildpeak AT3ws but want to switch it up to their MTs in a 33"

Step 1: Don't go into the mud.

Step 2: Hate yourself for forgetting step 1.

    Step 3: Panic

Step 4: All traction aids slowly, 4 wheel low, Atrac, locker, saw the wheel, rock forward and reverse.

Step 5: All traction aids with wheel speed, 4 wheel low, Atrac, locker, saw the wheel, rock forward and reverse and hope you have voidy enough tires to sling and self clean.

    Step 6: Swear

Step 7: Hope you packed the shovel.

    Step 8: Get out.

    Step 9: Get all muddy.

    Step 10: Begin digging.

Step 11: Get even more muddy that you thought you were going to.

    Step 12: Swear

    Step 13: Keep digging

Step 14: Panic again, now call your friends and act like it's not that serious.

    Step 15: Swear

Step 16: Keep digging and stacking rocks and boards and whatever you have around you.

Step 17: See if you're lucky enough to drive out, if not return to step 15.

Step 18: Go home and put another dollar in the winch fund jar.

This isn't a comprehensive list, but it's a good beginner's guide It's especially important to remember step number one!!!

Step 0: which is also helpful if you've forgotten is AIR DOWN!

This is Step zero as it should be done as soon as you hit the play dirt.

    Like, so many.
I've had some success cutting my tires back and forth while applying a liberal amount of skinny pedal.

How am I going to learn my limits if I don't grossly misjudge them and get myself in terrible situations?
