Wait until they're 25 years old I think. Then it's just money and paperwork.

Take the diesel engine out of them and put a gas motor in.

    You'll have to either

a.) get Toyota motor corp to provide an official letter that states that the Hilux meets all us safety and emissions regulations

b.) pay an importer to bring it up to snuff with us regulations

Or wait until it's 25 years old and then you can legally import it with little to no paperwork or hassle

    Like, so many.
I've had some experience with the Hilux in West Africa and I've found it to be a great truck. I think it would only fill a very niche market here though.

What he said. I got my 1988 Hilux imported from Japan with a 2.4 diesel in December. It's the same engine that the show "Top Gear" couldn't destroy.

I went through an importer who specializes in importing Toyota diesels from overseas. He handled all the shipping and required paperwork. Once he got it in the states he does maintenance on them and flips them guaranteeing that they are able to be registered in all 50 states. I had no problems registering mine in Florida.

Specifically I'm looking for places I could camp that aren't hokey "camping" lots
