Man, I wish I'd spent more time brainstorming this or you'd written this before I bought my new rear bumper with the swing arm tire mount.

Has anyone else had this experience after cutting the exhaust after the rear axle?

I didn't want to cut the exhaust so I bought a MBRP with a turn down just before the rear axle. Love the location but the sound ain't for me. About to reinstall my OEM muffler/exhaust, but going to cut it, wire brush the surface rust, and paint it.

I checked and rechecked this. The axle is slightly warmer but nothing like as was described.

nice write up and pictures! i did the same thing but kept it simple. sawzall exhaust with it still mounted, lower spare and hammer the guides out of the way a bit to allow the larger tire to fit. zero issues, took 10 minutes.

I have 255/85 spare, which spec's slightly taller than a 285, and I just put it up normally. Didn't have to hammer or adjust anything. I will be chopping exhaust thought. That's in the way for sure.

I had the MBRP turn down as well which I think you could see in some of the photos. Yeah.. that didn’t last long. I put back on the stock muffler/exhaust after cutting it and no noticeable noise increase over uncut stuck. The MBRP was way too loud with a drone for my taste.

I ended up grinding the dried AZ mud and rust off my old exhaust/muffler, cutting it, and painting it with high heat primer and then Rustoleum 2000degree high heat paint.

    Before and after.

Anyone noticed a difference doing a axle dump cut, after cutting the tail pipe of my MBRP 3in exhaust the noise is less drone but the torque is gone and the throttle response is much less, so laggy ? Why is that..........

I have the stock exhaust cut to axle dump (and very briefly had the MBRP turndown exhaust) and didn’t notice any performance loss with either setup
