Hey guys, i have a 10 ft EMT conduit tube that I need to carry a hundred miles on the turnpike in my short bed.

Not sure how to tie it down.

Doesn't really seem safe to leave it hanging over the tailgate, but what do I know. Not looking to buy any expensive add-ons to help carry it.

Just lay it over the tailgate with the tailgate closed and strap it down. You can put it from corner to corner if it doesn't stick out to far from the side.

    1) Buy the conduit you need where you are going

    2) Open your back window and put one end on the dash in a towel. Since you have a short bed, I'm assuming double cab, which has some distance from window to dash.

    3) Cut it in half and both pieces will lie in bed. Use coupling to rejoin.

This, then use a red shirt or flag of some kind near the end of the item

Cut it in half...join the two pieces back together with a coupling.

Tailgate up or down, it doesn't matter. Place tube in truck, strap down, tie red flag on the end and drive. A ten footer is as long as I'd carry, but I've carried 10' lumber, pipe and kayaks in my truck for years with no issues. I'd prefer tailgate up since this will get the end extending past the truck up high enough that most cars would be under tube if they were to get too close at a traffic light etc.

Buy a cap, then a full prinsu. Should only set you back about 4G. Easy.

Otherwise, cut and shut with a coupling, About $3. Your choice.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
I carry a 15’ mast for a little sailboat I transport in the bed frequently. I rest the forward end, very lightweight, on the arm of the passenger side mirror and secure with a bungee. The aft end gets suspended after being wrapped a couple wraps along bedside with a bungee. I use the tie downs in the bed for this. Worked like this for many years with no problem. I also brought home a bunch of 1/4 round wood mounding from HD like this.

step 1: buy 10 ft pole
    step 2: buy 2nd gen
step 3: hold pole and when it touches truck, start backing up

enjoy the "looks" of your 2nd gen

Cut in half but if you can’t for some reason then through the back window and rest it on the dash with a towel. I’ve carried crown moulding this way.

If you are worried about having 5 ft hanging out of the bed and it bending, buy a 10' 2x4 and duct tape it to the board. Then you can load it in the bed with the tailgate up and use one of the anchor points in the bed to strap it down.
Don't forget a red flag so the cops don't stop you.

So.... have you thought about mounting it under your truck? there should be at least 10 feet of open space without suspension that it could be strapped to. As long as your not rock crawling with this pipe you should be fine.

Duct tape and zip tied will keep it up and from sliding back and forth.

These bed extenders that fit in the hitch are awesome for long items, I had 10 foot sections of gutters here.

I wonder if u could go side mirror, then diagonal through the back window. An emt isn't likely to damage anything.
