The harmonic balancer on my truck was shot and i needed to replace it. Easy enough, right? Got all of the belts off, got the crankshaft pulleys off, put the new harmonic balancer on and got it all back together. Went pretty well aside from some fan schroud bolts that snapped, at least thats all i thought happened. When I start up the engine i noticed a small oil trail leading from the crankshaft seal and when i rev the engine i saw there was significant splatter all around my engine compartment.

Is there a seal there behind the harmonic balancer that i need to replace?

    ignore all that.

Remove your belts to do this

On my tacoma it has 2 pulleys stacked held to the actual balancer with 4 10mm bolts and its held to the crankshaft with a single 19mm bolt which is a bitch to get off. Click the starter with a breaker bar against the floor is the only way. I got the pulleys off the HB by using a hammer on the shaft while holding the whole thing in my hands (the HB shaft sits above the other two pulleys)
before you put your new HB on make damn sure you replace the seal behind it. thats all i got

I hope someone comes across this if they're thinking of replacing their harmonic balancer themselves, BUY A NEW SEAL

    BUY A NEW SEAL
BUY A NEW CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL
    SERIOUSLY DO THAT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkmFa9KFDoA this guy is crazy but you see what he does with an older Toyota pickup? yeah that seal is important and its cheap. Front crankshaft oil seal.
