I'm looking to put on some 35x12.50R17 tires on my truck, but I am still on stock suspension.

How many inches of height is needed to compensate for this size tire (regardless of the need for a chop job) and what do I have to buy to achieve that additional height at a reasonable price?

I've already been recommended Bilstein 5100's, but any further advice is much appreciated.

Lifts don't allow you to functionally fit bigger tires. A stock Tacoma has approximately 8" of total travel in the front, 4" of down travel to fully extended and 4" of up travel to fully compressed at stock ride height. If you lift your truck, it just changes where your truck sits in that range, not the range itself. For example, if you lift your truck 2", you will now have 2" of down travel and 6" of up travel. Basically, where your wheel is fully compressed stock is where it will be fully compressed lifted, if you don't add taller bump stops.

Here's a thread to read through if you're serious about 35's. It's not for the faint of heart.

I think it's also safe to say wheel width and offset play a big part on what needs cutting and how much needs to be cut.

You posted this in another thread. We like to help but if you can’t even make up your mind what you need help with don’t expect the best help you can get. Let us know what tire size you are going with.

I saw the TacomaBeast video on the "ideal" daily Tacoma, although I am still deciding between the 33's and 35's, the only reason why I would go for the 33's is for convenience and cost effectiveness, but for looks I loved the way it looked in that rolling shot they did. With my truck being relatively new I am still paranoid about doing anything major to it so early, but I truly did like how TacomaBeasts build looked during that video and I wanted to replicate something like that myself.

I haven't fully made up my mind, but I still want to learn about what it takes to make the 35's work. If the costs and the work necessary aren't worth the overall better look of the truck then I will do the 285's, but I want to see how far I can go into the 35 rabbit hole before I call it quits.

Ideal daily is stock. I would not want to fuel bill cruising on 35's all day every day hell I don't like the fuel bill rolling around on 295's.

It's best to outline your goals for the truck then you can get proper insight on the best way to achieve what your after. All I'm going to say is to do 35's properly over a 33 is alooooot more cash.

With 35's don't forget to factor in the higher fuel cost, regearing, cmc, and added wear/damage on associated components.

Being new to all this I would go with some 33”s instead. It takes a lot more work than people realize with 35s not rub daily but especially off roading. Be prepared to do a good amount of cutting. I have 33s and had to cut and trim a good amount for actually using it off roading and not rubbing.

Nah, 37s with IFS and the RCLT kit. SAS is the easy way out.
