The smarter the vehicles get with safety stuff the dumber the drivers seem to get.

Why do people assume airbags mean totalled?

    Jeez.

That is hardly how it works.

Sorry but depending on the state, that is how it works. In Florida if the vehicle is more than 4 years old, its usually totaled by the insurance company if an airbag is deployed. I've seen it more times than I can count.

I got in a crash in my Dad's 01' ranger in 2011. It was like $9K in damage to the truck. The KBB was $9.8K I think, and the insurance company fixed it....He should have pocketed the $, as the truck was not the same after repairs and he traded it in for his 2011 Tacoma a month or 2 later.

What do you want to happen? I had a similar collision with mine and the initial estimate was $6,200 to repair per the appraiser's estimate. The frame on mine was swayed and I pushed to have it totaled out. Ultimately that's what they did for me. I probably could have had it saved, but given that it wrecked the frame, I didn't want it back.

I paid out for a depreciated amount for most all my modifications including my cap, was able to take back items they did not pay me out for and paid me a total settlement plus sales tax.

EDIT: My air bags did not deploy in the accident.

Obviously, I'd want a new one (3rd gen ). Blue book says my 14' is worth 23k as is, before the wreck anyway, with less than 37k miles (average for a 2014 is 41k right now). A 2016 in at least a 6 cylinder retails for around 26k, but I'm sure her insurance company will give me some bogus amount for mine, if it is totaled.

Just went to check it out today, I hadn't been able to see the left side because her car was pressed against it. But, I saw it today and it's pretty rough, both doors are mangled. Popped the gas cap open. Not sure if thats a safety feature of some sort? Or if it warped the panel or something. The aluminum reinforcement beam that the bumper connects to was skewed. Anyway, I'm starting to hope it's totaled, because I'm not liking the idea of driving this thing around after repairs.

Glad you are OK. If they fix it don't forget to get diminished value.

My wife hit a chunk of concrete in the road in her 2 year old Honda Pilot going 80MPH. Passenger side airbags all deployed, but no damage whatsoever to any sheet metal on the car. 1 bent rim, control arm bent, 1 blown tire, and $11K in damage.

Truck looks like it's going to be close to me, based on some of the others I've seen on the site. Sorry that happened but glad everyone's ok. Let us know.

IMO ... You can NEVER over document ANY claim with ANY insurance company ... good luck OP.

Not true. I've seen many cars that had air bags deploy and were not total losses (for reference, I am former auto claim adjuster).

Total loss occurs when the cost to repair the vehicle exceeds a certain percentage of the vehicles actual cash value (ACV). The percentage varies from state to state. For example, in North Carolina, the total loss threshold is 75%. Therefore, if damages exceed 75% of the vehicles current ACV, by law it must be declared a total loss.

Hard to say based off that one pic, but I doubt your truck is a total loss. If it is repairable, make sure you assert a diminish of value (DOV) claim. DOV claims provide monetary compensation to account for the fact that the vehicle's value is reduced due to it being involved in an accident. The greater the damage, the higher the amount for DOV. Some insurance companies will try to say that you can only receive money for a DOV claim if you actually sell the vehicle and take a hit because of the reduced value. However, that is not true. They still owe it to you, but the amount is reduced because the loss in value decreases the longer you keep the vehicle.

It also depends on the state, I think it's Alabama has a flat 80% cap that you can't exceed.

OP I'd be concerned about the fluids on the ground, depending on what they are the insurance company may be concerned about the damage inside the engine compartment. Good luck!

Thank God I have only been in two accidents with subsequent repairs and doubt that truck will "feel" the same again. I accepted the repairs then traded out because of my eerie feeling after each wreck. Crazy talk....eh, probably

Do NOT go through their insurance company, unless it's the only way you can file a claim in your state. You always engage your own company and subrogate. When I had my accident, I first started dealing with the other driver's insurance company. He was 100% at fault as he crossed the median. Their insurance company wanted to total the truck (yay!) and give it back to me (huh?). So basically they came to a total loss value of the truck of $X and then what they assumed the salvage value of the truck would be $Y and cut me a check for the difference. They also demanded I remove the truck from the body shop at my cost as they were being charged storage fees. I immediately went to my local agent and went WTF, my insurance company stepped in and gave me an offer for the truck, plus the cost of modifications, plus sales tax as they were acquiring the vehicle from me. The wild thing is the first insurance company had given the truck a salvage value of something around $14,000, so my offer would have been tiny. I couldn't make that parting the truck myself, and my neighbors would have KILLED me.

That's also state dependent. I went after diminished value (I'm in MA) as a way to get the claim high enough to teeter into total loss and both companies laughed at me. They tried to claim that it didn't exist (WTF?) and that accidents on a CarFax actually don't matter. I pretty much laughed in their faces, but I was over a barrel. Luckily I was totaled out and that was that.

10k to 12k in damage, not totaled. Of course we can't see all the damage. in the pics. A legit bodyshop should have no problems fixing it.

FYI OP, you are going to get a lot of bad advice, especially on the internet, about how claims work, what totals a car and what you should watch out for. Keep in mind state specific guidelines will apply. I have 8yrs experience in auto claims and I am always amazed how little "car" people know about repairs and insurance claims.
