How many vss (vehicle speed sensors) are there?

    I believe I found two -

One on the right side of transfer case - looks like this -
    83181-12020
    61hwir1TWzL._AC_SL1200_.jpg
& one on the left middle-ish, upper transmission - like this -
    8941150010
    51qeiwqL81L._AC_SX569_.jpg
According to Toyota two of the 8941150010
are required, they show two of the same exact part on the left side. In other words, a total of three sensors.

    https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_2...Vehicle-Speed-Sensor/63528230/8941150010.html

I can't find the 2nd left side sensor. Nor much on how to test this one. I see other connectors, however nothing going to an arched head & one bolt sensor like this one.

Can anyone confirm if two are needed on the left & please possibly point out or post a pic of where they are?

There is only 1 (VSS) - it's on your transfer case.
On the PreRunner, it's in the tail section of the transmission (no tcase of course).

There have been different versions of VSS over the years but most are compatible.

I put togther some notes on VSS compatibility here -
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4wd-swap-how-to-transfer-case-vss-speed-sensor-options.786403/

What specifically are you trying to test? I can see if I can help with info, just need to know what you're trying to do.

Whelp, as you know I have been hunting down an idle issue. Not long ago my CEL/MIL light stopped turning on when key was initially turned. So I did a little hunting on this & combo meter comes up, which sends one to speedometer & VSS. Going way back, my speedometer has always been off by a few. I asked on here is that was ok & was informed it was no biggie. Fast forward to now. The other day I'm out & I go by one of those speed things. I was going 32/33 & it clocked me at 25. Went by another later, going a little faster, came in about 10 mph off.

My cruise control, which I barely, if ever, use, is not working correctly. Gauge light comes on, so there is some recognition it exists.

& confused on the second sensor. I have one in that spot that looks like it, yet I do not have ABS. Do you know what it is for?

See? You made me go out to the truck and look lol. So yeah, on the left side of the transmission, specifically on the transfer case adapter, you have this -

    upload_2023-3-17_14-33-1.jpg

From what you describe (speedo behavior), I'm more inclined to think its your VSS on the transfer case. I saw similar f-ups on the speedo when I had that failing cheap aftermarket speed sensor adapter installed. If your VSS is on its way out, could account for the discrepancies you're seeing on the speedo.

As for that revolution sensor, I can only find this (attached). Because it involves unplugging the ECU and testing at that location as well as if it were failing it should be throwing a code (P1700), I'd focus on the transfer case VSS.

Check the connection/connector on the transfer case VSS and make sure its clean and looks ok. From there, I'd say pull it and look at the teeth on that little nylon gear. If looks ok, might consider replacing the tcase VSS, might just be with the connector. :notsure:

Oh and from what I read, if the revolution sensor has issues the ECU uses the tcase VSS as a backup.

Ha-ha! They can't just call it a revolution sensor on the parts sites. I'll have to see if I can hunt it down in the wiring manual, Thank you.

I did this test & passed.
    2023-03-17_175856.jpg

However, for even more fun I also decided to hook it back to the harness & do the test by backprobing, key in the on position & it failed. Or rather, did not perform as it did with the FSM test. I'm getting voltage. It's not changing when I rotate the sensor. Main dif in the tests would be key on vs not.

If you end up replacing it, I'd stick with OEM. You might be ok with aftermarket but...

Kristi what did you spin the sensor with??

My first move for sensors is check the EWD first,

It was simple to spot The V1 having 2 wires and the v10 having 3 wires .

    My hand.

I have been using it. There's a learning curve involved.

So for me it was not so simple. In looking at the engine control diagrams, the three wire is on it. Not the two. It wasn't until the locations & sensors were ID'ed that I then figured I needed to check the transmission diagram....

Thank you for our help & for this p1700 info. My downloaded '01 FSM only goes to DI-265.

Going so slow by hand can the sensor even send a signal?

That would register thinking back to the old days with cables trying to spin it fast enough by hand.

Yes. Course I didn’t think twice about it since the FSM put it as “rotate” (no rpm specified).

To add to my other post on this.
I have been at times using the 3r engine instructions from the ‘01 manual if there was something I needed to look at that was beyond the DI-265 page point. I see now this can’t always work. I just looked for p1700 for the 3r & there isn’t one. In other words, it’s no wonder my search for “speed sensor” brought up next to no references.

I also have the ‘03 manual, however it is set up differently in how you access what you’re looking for. It isn’t searchable.

As far as a code goes, my cel has been funky for a while. Or it seems that way. I know it works (or did) because if I unplug say, the maf sensor, & turn the key, after I plug it back in & start the truck, I’ll have a maf code. I put “or did” because now my cel is not coming on at startup, so I’m not sure if codes of that type are even being stored.

My problem is still with P0500 VSS Sensor A. I even called a friend of mine who is the parts manager for Servco Pacific Toyota in Hawaii. He said I would have to bring my truck in for diagnostics. Crap! I really want to find it myself, but if I have to break down and pay the $165 per hour for them to tell me what I know. Well I guess I have no choice.

A quick search for P0500 in the 2nd Gen forum returned these - look over these two.

For what it's worth, on a newly acquired 2001 my CEL was burned out worked right when I got it and then failed. I changed bulb mah or may not be your CEL light problem.

My VSS's were in need of replacement. My speedometer is back to it's usual close-ish norm. However, light is still out, so I guess a bulb check is next....
