How many of you have had torque converter issues?

Wanted to see how many other people have had torque converter failure within 120k miles on 2016 TRD off roads. Mine has failed at 115k miles and toyota wants me to pay $6,400 to replace the transmission. From what I have read this is an extremely common problem and seems like the company is trying to avoid responsibility for an engineering failure. I just wanted to see how many other have had this issue with toyota.

I have not heard or read any confirmed torque convertor failures.
That said, I have read some having a shudder,, based on it's intended design and programming that some do not like.

be skeptical, get a second opinion. In the end, if yours is bad, it's bad,,,, polling doesn't fix anything.

Torque converter shudder I guess would be construed as a failure. What’s the condition or complaint you’re having? Shudder?

I have the dreaded shudder but toyoyta diagnosed it and said my torque converter is failing and likely putting metal in my trans. They recommend a new transmission and say every mile I drive is causing more damage to my drivetrain

That sounds like total BS to me. When this ACTUALLY happens on Jeep wranglers you simply flush the tranny and clean it thoroughly and replace the crap torque converter.

Jeeps do this as low as 65k miles. It is a $1200.00 repair.

I solved the shudder by ignoring D and running S4 most of the day (up to 40mph), S5 (up to 55++) sometimes, and S6 only above 65MPH on a highway.20231122_181457.jpg

Tuning gets rid of the shudder as well.

A shuddering torque converter will not send metal through the transmission. The shudder is cause by the friction material in the TCC clutch not “slipping” smoothly.
Get the fluid flushed. See if it still does it, have a transmission shop do a pressure test. Besides a bad friction surface or a worn pump bushing you don’t need a new transmission.

On jeeps the TC breaks internally.

Got the truck at 74k miles, I've had the shudder for about 3 weeks And had a transmission service a week ago did my support bearing the week before that. Should i just go ahead and do a tune up? I'm trying to avoid spending more money on things that aren't going to solve the issue. I still have 3 years of payment on this mf

I sure would love to be proven wrong here because I have basically flat out called them liars or ignorant! I don't feel good about that if I am wrong.

Even if the tc is shot, why not just replace that and not the entire transmission?

That's what I said and that's when they told me it would be a risk that I will have more trans problems in the future because it is most likely putting metal from the torque converter into my trans from fluid transfer

Some of the first trucks put onto the market in 2016 were notoriuos for being factory filled low on transmission fluid causing premature wear and component failure.. For this reason and in my opinion I would try this before replacing transmission or TC.
Do a few drain and fills. It won’t hurt anything more than already experiencing with the shudder and I bet it’ll help.
Plenty of videos on how to perform this job in your driveway. It’s not hard. Id recommend watching “team oil drop” on YouTube.
Your truck doesn’t have too many miles to drain and fill the transmission fluids consecutively 3 times for your next 1,000 miles if you wanted to put completely new fluids in it. it holds a total of around 10.8 qts so 3 drain and fills will get you nearly flushed yet leave some of the wear metals in the fluid which is not a bad thing for a broken in transmission over 100k miles..
In other words drive it approximately 1,000 miles between each drain and fill and do this 3 times
If somebody has under filled it from previous ownership you’ll know bc you should get over 2 quarts out closer to somewhere between 2.5- 3 quarts when drain it first time. Put that back in plus an additional half quart for overfill plug during operating temp mode
    You’ll need:
Measuring container up to 5 quarts for the drain and you’ll want to put the same amount in as you drain out of it.
short sized impact 24mm socket preferably but standard will work
    a 1/2 inch breaker bar
14 mm socket and 1/4”or 3/8” drive ratchet
    5 millimeter Allen hex
A gallon per drain and fill of Valvoline Maxlife ATF or any ATF that is TOYOTA WS approved..
I personally use Amsoil Signature Series in blue packaging and have had great results and smoother feeling shifts afterward.
I only get out just at 3 quarts from the pan during drain and fill.. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN drain or over fill plugs(15ft/lb is plenty) 24 mm fill plug is around (42 ft/lb)GOOD LUCK

Took it I to a family friends transmission shop and he put some kind of additive in the trans fluid and so far the shudder is totally gone

I am so disappointed in dealerships. Always have been and always will be it seems. Caveat Emptor should not apply after the sale at a place you spend the second highest amount of money you will ever spend on something (house is first).

My ‘20 SR is at 39k and has a rough idle when sitting at a light in D. If I put it in neutral it smooths out. Is this the shudder that is being referenced? If it didn’t go away I’d suspect the injector “cleaning” that I read about here and there.
