What I mean is, if you periodically clean your injectors so that fuel flow is not the issue , how long will the solenoid last. I've read they're good for a billion stop goes. Not sure what that equates to in mileage.

    Thanks

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
By clean your injectors you mean remove them flow test replace all parts as needed??

I think that should be a billion cycles like anything things break one coil might fail in a few hundred miles the next one might still be going 3 vehicles later after a million plus miles.

I venture if you had the numbers you could do the math to figure it out but then all the idle time will throw the numbers way off.

In my opinion run injectors till they fail/start to fail then depending on the difficulty in changing them and/or available funds change all or just the bad one. About 3 months ago I installed a set of MotorWest upgrade injectors in my truck at 290k, I was getting a p0304 misfire code about once a week on startup. Everything else checked out so I changed em and it hasn’t set the code again. For what it’s worth I recommend them.
as far as cycles till failure, :notsure: But everything eventually wears out so at 290 I figured it was time.

    The injectors typically don’t fail,
It’s the fuel filters in the injectors that get plugged up slowly

352k here on 27yr old original injectors and fuel pump
this past winter the MPG on my rig took a non-traditional dive down 3mpg on a full tank under normal-to-me driving
traditionally would ALWAYS see nearly 360 miles before tank was near empty and had to make a run for some fresh taco juice
this winter, late in February (+ throughout March and April) there were times i would barely make it to 300 miles on a full 17.75 gallon full tank and for the most part baewly managed 320 on similarly filled full tank before the low-fuel-light started getting long in the tooth
using e10 87 octane except in Colorado where 85 e10 is an option

perhaps it might be something else that is out of the ordinary going on with the engine and seemingly abnormally drinking the fuel like there is a hole somewhere!
i am confused and my mind is literally tired and shot thinking of what it could possibly be and the best possible solution that is feasible on the pocketbook

other than the refineries mixing in some weird stuff into the winter-blend fuel i really do not know other than having to plunk an extra 300$ in fuel every 10k miles, because THAT is really going to add up to many thousands in extra fuel expenditures from the ordinary over the long haul

Bad gas mileage can be caused by lots of things,
    Injection filters need cleaning,
    Fuel filter,
    Bad MAF,
    Spark plugs,
    Air cleaner,
    Bad 02 sensor,
    Cat getting plugged up
    Etc

how about an oddball rebuilt R150F
    from an '02 thrown into a '97

those 02 sensors might be worth a look into
they are original and WERE disturbed for the first time
but there has been NO CEL triggered yet
scanned for codes at the dealer and Nothing came up

they told me to get some 200$ upper intake de-carb cleaning service they provide
and to wait for warmer weather LOL

As long as the transmission is the same model 95-2004 will all interchange.

there is a chance the valves are full of carbon, you could remove the intake and look and clean them but that’s a lot of work.

codes don’t always pop up on these old type ECU system.
If you’re gas mileage has dropped a lot something is definitely off

i chatted with the R150F rebuilder in CA and he hinted there is a slight difference from 02 to 97, extra parts or something i recall him saying
then I noticed that the RPM gauge is running a bit higher than before at near the same speed from pics i had from the past... anywhere from 250 to 500 RPM more now

clogged cat that you mentioned is also a possibility that i was warned about once from one of the dealer provided air induction cleanings last fall
who on this earth can check the cat like that out? Lol

Cats are likely to get clogged by oil in the exhaust, and not rich or lean conditions. Too common are people pointing fingers at clogged cats when the likelihood is extremely unlikely.

That's some exceptionally good MPG's. Did that year have a smaller tank and do you drive 100% on the highway? My 02 v6 MT specs say 18.5g tank.....also, my 02 has never got that kind of mileage from a tank, not when new, not when stock, never.

If my math is correct you traditionally would get around 21 MPG, actually higher since you probably have at least a couple gallons left. I can think of one time that I averaged 21 MPG on a tank in this '02, that tank was 100% highway driving and the truck was completely stock. Even that 300-320 miles per tank I would consider good in my truck as a combined average, that's with the larger tank haha.

about 75% freeway, i have to account for the seemingly endless stop-and-go Chicago traffic once in awhile when the truck makes it there
about 21 or 20.5 historical average is correct, freeway miles from 60 mph to 90 mph at safe stretches with a good road in Missouri, 80 to 160 pound sandbags in the bed usually

once when fuel was well over 4$ I did try to keep the 5VZFE to 50mph in 5th gear for a whole tank and made it about 450 miles staying in the slow lane LOL.. averaged 25 MPG!!
after the red lowfuel warning light has been on for 30 miles i often can fit nearly (and sometimes a bit over) 18 gallons up that neck to the tippy top, not a good idea i hear! but have done it for 200k miles with no significant issues yet since i always burn off 20 to 30 miles before it gets parked

only two recent instances to my recollection that this truck has failed to get well over 300 miles on a full tank
once was wheelin' south through the Dakotas into a constant 30mph wind with higher gusts and the other was some nasty gas at a Murphy's station in northern Iowa... never went back to that place LOL

whenever i am in northern Colorado it seems to get MUCH better MPG with the 85 octane, 23 MPG with that 5VZFE and R150F
few weeks ago i got 390 miles on a full tank coming from Fort Morgan CO to York NE on i80 with cruise set at 75mph, breezy wind at the back and a 2500 ft. drop in elevation all downhill LOL

That is impressive. I honestly can't recall the most miles I've got from a tank, just remember the best MPG being 21mpg, and that was like on one occasion when stock. Most miles have been on larger tires and lifted, so I've gotten used to fill ups at around 210-240 miles, average around 14-16 mpg. I would say my realistic average even when stock was only 16-18, just under the 17-19 EPA rating on window sticker.

I have read that, for whatever reason, some experience better mileage at higher elevation. This truck has been operated for the most part, not much above sea level. Anyway, I guess to stay on topic, still on the original injectors at 216k, and no indication that they need to be serviced.

I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
289K and no problems. My Foxbody Mustang was a little weak so I sent them out and the 302 was a new engine. So you could send them out but Tacoma/Toyota is superior to FORD by double

what is the approximate going time to swap out the 5VZFE fuel injector set of six
    referred to as book time?
i have asked around locally but these days these places are out to pick your pockets with the 150$ to 180$ charge to even look at your truck and then they can give an estimate and how long it will take for the task
and then the challenge to give them a rebuilt set from the motorwest place? instead of using the brand-new OEM injectors at full MSRP, which is more than 1000$ last i checked

i will hunt down the fuel receipts with mileage marked for the week+ spent in southern Florida before changes to truck made, that is as close to sea level this truck has ever been LOL

Originals where made by Matsushita electronics.

    which probably almost last forever.....

Sometime early 2000's ? .......Matsushita stopped making these...when all the subsidiaries where condensed into Panasonic corp...

Denso then picked up the ball.......these probably dont last forever.....

    With a 4banger at 150K I swapped mine out...and kept the originals.
    With a 5vz I would start shopping for a set after 200k....

worst scenario is a dripping injector over time will pit the top of the piston.

Years past I've found the original matsushita's....they were priced between $200 and $300 ea........and either had to come from Dubui or Japan.
