I have a 2012 PreRunner, 2WD, 4 cyl. I just bought a vacation home back up north and will be driving back and forth. Each trip will be about 2300 miles total. Right now, I have 48K on it already. I have the truck serviced every 5K or sooner at the dealership. All the mileage is highway and I try to keep it about 2.5K RMP. I don't beat it. It's just I am always moving something north or south.

How many miles can I expect without major expense and or work ?? Thanks in advance, Be Safe JIM

The best thing about owning a Toyota truck, there really is nothing to worry about. Yes the frames are an issue in some states where snow is an issue, but every single car/ truck available will rot away under similar circumstances.

IMO the 2.7 is one of the most reliable motors on the road.

Yes, but I don't think every single car/truck will rot at such an accelerated rate that the Tacoma does. I live in south western Indiana, winter isn't that bad here and this is my second Tacoma to loose the frame.

There was a local guy here (Central KY) that had a 2009 Tacoma that moved to Cali and couldn't pass inspection because of the rusted frame.

I may not be comparing apples to apples, but my 1983 Toyota 22-RE truck had 415,000 miles on it when I sold it. Drive train was still solid.

Whether or not that can happen with one of these newer types is another story.

Different questions to answer, one is how many miles is the motor capable of logging in it's life, the other is how many miles is your engine going to last.

I was anticipating a 500k mile motor when I bought my 2.7 in 2013, but now that it's 13 months old and has 21,500 miles on it I've had 2 problems. One was the valve spring recall that wasn't done correctly on my truck the first time and caused problems, the other is a catalytic converter failure last week that is still not fixed.

I can look at things a few different ways, but one thing for sure that my Tacoma has done that no vehicle prior has done is require repairs and have super premature part failure, it's also had a recall which is the first for me and my vehicle history. I'm hoping things smooth out, I love everything about the truck, but to be honest my confidence in it being a truck I can drive for a decade or 2 is taking a few bruises. Right now, a chunk of metal is rattling around my catcon whenever the engine is running, so it'll remind me for a few days until I hear back from Toyota about how they're going to fix it.

I put 197K on my 81 pickup and 207K on my 95. Both were still running strong when I sold them. (I just rolled over 9K on my 14!)

My 04 was a 2.7l and a good indication. I did nothing to it all other than brakes, fluids and filters. Not even spark plugs! New tires and keep filling it with fuel. was 230k miles when it rotted out and was running perfect. If you can keep the frame solid I would say 300 is EASY before any real work. OH! Almost forgot. I did do a new muffler from the cat back. It was when I bought the muffler that the guy told me I had holes through my frame.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
The 2.7 4 cylinders are awesome and are just as reliable as the old 22RE's, stay up on that maintenance and you will get probably 500k out of it I would bet. Have the timing chain checked out at 100k, run synthetic oil and enjoy it!

I heard of a guy with a first gen with a 3.4 V6 go 629k or something like that, if a V6 can do it I know the 4 banger is more than capable.

With all those highway miles, assuming it gets normal maintenance and running conventional (dino) oil, I bet it will go 300k miles minimum. If you want maximum life from the motor, I suggest you use synthetic oil, you can safely run a longer OCI after the warranty expires and it's not much more expensive than conventional oil. Don't worry about the timing chains (yes there are 2), they will last the life of the motor. Your question about major expense and/or work... if you're talking about regular maintenance, here are the normal long-term items other than oil changes and tire rotations:
    transmission service
    differential service
    spark plugs
    MAF and TB cleaning
wear items like brakes, tires, u-joints & shock absorbers
    wheel bearings (eventually)
    ???

Costs and work other than regular maintenance -- things like failures and repairs -- well your guess is as good as mine. These are good trucks and they don't break often.

My 2006 2.7L has 108k and it runs perfect aside from the piston slap when cold -- it's a common thing with these motors and isn't an issue for me, I just let it idle an extra minute so the slapping noise stops before I drive off. I'm switching to synthetic soon because I want mine to last a hundred bazillion miles. Frame and everything underneath is super clean.

My 87 4wd was a 4cy carb and was pushing 250k when I sold the truck....very little freeway miles as it was a work / service truck...other than the mentioned piston slap it had 0 issues other than normal maint. other than a water pump at about 150k. The 4 cylinder yota motors are pretty bullet proof as long as you take normal care of them.

What inspection are you referring too?

Cali does not have the same inspection that other states do. We have biannual smog and that's it. There is no safety inspection.

I brought a 72' VW into the state and the inspection consisted of checking the VINs.

    Are you spreading FUD?

I've got a twenty spot on 459,000 miles. Maybe we can start a pool and whoever gets closest wins the pot.

Back when things were simpler, I got 415K out of an '83 with a 22-RE engine. 2-3 yrs. after I sold it, the truck was still running. Yeah...I know....not 2nd gen, but still proud of it.

Expect an automatic to need an overhaul around 250 to 300 thousand miles. Sooner if much towing is done. The engine should easily last 400,000 plus if taken care of. That would be the major things.
