I think I counted 3 but only the one in the engine bay has a sensor.

    Anyone know why so many?

What Im wondering is if they are resonators to make the truck quieter instead of catalytic converters?

the ones by the engine are called "warm up catalytic converters" by industry standards. The 1 or 2 farther back (i dont know the exact amount) are the actual converters if you ask the experts. But all 3 or 4 do the same thing, just focus on different pollutants.

I wonder if removing them would have any effect on California smog test (Emissions) since they don't have a sensor.

simple answer, yes. There is nothing to be gained by removing them though.

I guess you've never tried a "test" pipe to replace a cat then for "off road" testing of course??

Four cats on V6 3rd gen.

The main cat is up by exhaust manifold. A/F sensors before and after to ensure functionality.

Post "cat" appears to be a resonator. Note no A/F sensors after that resonator, but Toyota says both are cats. Price check says list $600 on front, $900 on rear. That implies both are precious metal cats.

    Tweakers don't know the difference.

    Four Cylinder.

Oddly enough factory manual identifies both as cats which seems very odd.

It won’t pass visual inspection during smog here in Cali if the tech knows what he’s doing (actually does the inspection )

OBD II will confirm A/F sensor is working pre and post-cat. On the aft cat just seems odd there is not a third sensor. I suspect Toyota split rare earth material between them, but prices imply the post-cat has more precious metal. Either way another reason for full skid plates.

They have all the CATs needed to meet EPA and FMVSS regulations.

Don't remove them, especially in CA.

Lets try to avoid knowingly expelling noxious gases. Our lungs appreciate the care.

Sanity price checked 2018 Toyota Prius. $1208 Those are high targets. It's a complex system, so I suspect Toyota OEM prices are pre covid and when precious metal prices got so insane (Mines in South Africa shut down due to so many people having Covid).

Lung cancer sucks. About 20% of us with Lung Cancer never smoked. Sadly I've met 20-year-olds who need supplemental oxygen, a small unit like a backpack, and canella. The dude was out hiking, but I didn't talk too long to find out details, a nice day so we kept hiking. So keep those cats in place. Tread lightly and pack it out, leave no trace.

Just had mine replaced last month.....6 cylinder 4x4 (2016) has 4 of them. 2 main ones that do most of the work and the two rear ones that "catch" anything the main ones miss. This is according to my local mechanic.

Luckily still under 80,000 mile federal warranty as it would have cost me about $4,300 to do the entire replacement (includes manifolds) needed at the Toyota dealership.
