    Friday thread

I was told years ago you should let your car sit for a minute or two until you start driving it after turning it on. This may have just been for my old jetta, but it's supposed to let the fluids start cycling or heat the engine up? I typically wait until my bluetooth is connected and music starts playing before I shift and drive away.

Anyone do something similar? Just pop it in drive as soon as the truck turns on?

I start driving before I even start it. Been doing this for every year I've been alive.

I never start my vehicle and instantly throw it into drive while the engine is still cranking. But I’ve seen people do it. I give it at least 5 seconds

I've heard older people tend to drive slow because they're worried about exceeding 2k RPM as it might blow up their engine. o_O

Turns out automotive technology has advanced somewhat since the days of hand-cranking your starter.

Fun fact: The electric starter was invented in Dayton, Ohio!

More to the point: You're fine. Just don't try to throw it in gear while it's still cranking or it'll yell at you...

I personally give it 10-20 seconds if it's cold, mid 40's or below. Probably not be needed, just a me thing

After I set the choke, then let it warmup otherwise it’ll stall.

When it's cold, it fast idles for like 30 seconds. I wait till it drops down, then go. I take it easy, no hard pulls or rev too fast until the temp gauge is out of the cold range. If it's already warm I wait as long as it takes me put on my seat belt, and go.

I like to wait 10 seconds or so to let the oil get moving, but that's it. I also drive like a granny until the motor reaches normal operating temperature.

When it really cold, single digits and below, I give it a little more time.

But, there's no requirement for warm-up anymore. That was more important with old carburetor motors.

I usually dont start the truck until I've arrived at my destination. It gets great milage that way. :cookiemonster:

Usually I just start it and go. Most days I put on my seatbelt and sunglasses between starting and driving, but sometimes I get that stuff all out of order. I dont worry about it much.

Kind of reminds me of back in the day when dad blew the head gasket on his bike. Harley told him that's normal. Ever since then, before he left for work at 3AM he would let that bike idle in the garage for 10-15 minutes. Boy howdy the neighbors loved us...

Ha, in MN winter's some days would never be able to drive... Sometimes it's cold enough the needle won't move until you have been driving for a while. Those days, I usually start, wait for it to stop making scary noises, then go. o_O
