How long do the stock Bilstein shocks and coil-overs usually last?

I'm still on the original Bilstein shocks and coil-overs that came out of a factory sometime in 2008.

How long do they usually last?

If I were to replace them, are present-day Bilsteins any good, or should I consider something else?

    Thanks.

If they are on your 2009 they are 100 percent toast. Maybe not the coil overs but for sure the shocks. An easy cheap replacement is swapping them out for a pair of 3rd gens. They can be found for $200. If you have a off-road the ride will be similar with 3rd gen off-road take-offs and vice versa if you have a sport.

The OEM Bilsteins on my 2009 Sport with 124,000 miles still feel good.

If I push down on the back end of my truck and release it, the return to equilibrium happens very quickly in 1-1/2 motions.

But on the road, the ride feels very rough and sometimes teeth-jarring

Doesn't sound like a shock to me. Shocks don't cushion the ride, they simply damp out compression and rebound spring motions. I suppose if they were totally blown they could bottom out and ride rough, but then that should be obvious when you did your test.... it should have bounced around more. Could just be your tires are really worn low which can make the ride can a good bit rougher.

I still had my 07 prerunner stock Bilsteins at 165k and they are still good. I just changed them out because I wanted to get the 3rd gen take offs for a small lift and better ride. The ones that Toyota have last a long time.

The general rule of thumb for suspension components is 6yr/60k miles.

Obviously YMMV especially so depending on use case.

If you put around the parking lot once a month as your only driving it will probably hold out longer.

If you huck your shit off the dunes every weekend well you're probably going to be rebuilding more frequently.

    A lot more.

The Bilsteins on my 05 with 177K perform fine. No heavy offroading. They may be OEM replacements, but judging by the condition of the rubber cushion, they could be stock.

LOL... not any rule of thumb I have ever heard. Well, maybe if you are stadium racing or something... For road use Bilsteins at 60k miles are just barely broken in. Same with ball joints and tie rod ends.

I saved my OEM Bilsteins when replaced with 5100’s. They have about 40K and I replaced the rubber inserts. You can have em for a couple craft six packs. Im in Socal.

Mine have a 100K and are still strong. My only beef is the cheap paint they put on them.

I always liked that Bilstein yellow and blue... but the Toyota frame rust treatment spray mostly covered it up. Maybe that's a reason to get some new ones? ;-)

I'm too cheap. I took them off and masked the sticker off and repainted them with a yellow rustoleum paint. Worked great.

The truck has new Michelin Defenders, they are very good tires.

I agree that shocks don't cause a rough ride, they only reduce the post-bump oscillations.

Could the springs have somehow stiffened up?

your originals are done and perform poorly from factory

you’ll see when you upgrade them just how bad they were comparing in hindsight

All most as big of an improvement as replacing the bfg rugged fail tires!
