I thought I had lost the water pump on my 2003 2.4L at only 84,000 miles because coolant was dripping/dribbling onto the ground. Turned out to be the clamp on the new bottom radiator hose wasn't tight enough. I'd replaced the original spring tension clamp with worm gear type you tighten with a screwdriver. But it got me to wondering:

If your water pump has had to be replaced, what was the approximate mile reading when it failed?

I replaced mine at about 125 on my 3.4L, but only because I was doing my timing belt too.

I think the 2.4's having timing chains which iirc are lifetime. So I'd just keep an eye on the pulley (if it's loose or making noise, etc... replace it).

Most people don't even think about their water pumps for at least 100k though...

So far it has lasted 260k without leaking and I have no cooling issues.

Replaced mine at 175k due to the gasket leaking. The pump was still perfectly fine. It has a metal impeller so the only thing that could go bad would be the bearing.

Thanks for the reassurances. Sounds like I'm good for at least 80,000 more miles on this original pump. By that time I'll probably need to replace the belts again (just did them at 84,000) so I may do the pump at the same time as a pre-emptive measure.

Replaced mine at 72,000 because I was in there doing the timing belt and it's 15 years old.....I will say it looked perfect but while I was there I also did the crank seals and a new crank bolt. Just made sense when I had the front off the engine. I'd say no issue whatsoever going a while on the pump but I will never get past about 90-100000 on one because I will always change it with the timing belt

Tacoma 4cyls have timing chains, and you can change the WP without removing much else.

319k miles and 23 years on the original pump (2.7 engine). The only "pump related" parts I replaced was belt and coolant.

Haven't done my 3rz Taco, but my 92 pick up with the 22re went at 196000. The mechanic said it was more the pulley making noise than the pump being bad though.

I'm not a fan of worm drive clamps. In my experience they ruin the hose

I've found the biggest longevity to a water pump is keeping the fluid changed and fresh, it acts as a lubricant. I had one back in the day where I neglected to change it. This was in my dumb years as a shade tree mechanic, truck started overheating just a little and I couldn't figure out why,,, full of coolant, no leaks, nothing.
Finally tore it down and when I pulled the pump, the whole impellar was gone, ate up, just a few ribs left of what use to be the blades of the impellar, it was not circulating no coolant at all.

I've wondered the same thing. Mine was replaced under warranty at 60,000 miles. It's got 171,000+ miles on it now. Have thought about buying one just to have on hand for when it does go but since so many have gone 250,000+ without replacing one I have to wonder. I'll probably get one this summer just so I have one. The same for a starter and alternator.

    You never know.

Alternator is a good call, they typically need brushes anywhere from 200k - 300k. The starter is rebuildable though and will last a very long time.

I see most of the replies to my question are from 2.7L owners. Mine is a 2.4L. Does the 2.4 and 2.7 use the same water pump?
