    Hey Everybody,

How long do the stock mufflers and exhaust pipes generally last on the first generation Tacomas?

Thanks in advance for those who reply,
    Paul

    Depends on where you live.

If you live where they spread salt on the roads in the winter, they don't last all that long (the frames don't either). If that's the case, once it falls off replace it with a stainless system.

I live in Sacramento, where our seasons consist of hot, and rainy. We don't really get a "winter" and as such, I have extremely low rust. Even still, my exhaust (2004 original) is a bit rusty, but nothing I'd cry about.

I'm 99% sure the entire exhaust system on my Taco is original. That's 20 years and 225,000 miles, still holding together and it sounds fine.

I live where they mag water the roads. I had a new muffler put on and the exhaust guy said no need to replace any of the OEM piping. All in good working order. 200K miles on a 98 Taco.

My original was long gone before I bought the truck.

I now replace the whole exhaust after the third winter

is it good to hose down winter salty slop off of the piping hot exhaust and muffler :notsure: i probably did on many occasions at the wand wash, it still got split on the side or top a few years ago, so much for that grade of stainless!
replaced with air craft grade stainless catBack guaranteed no corrosion for 1Million miles, the last exhaust the truck shall ever need as advertised
now my dog does not hear me pulling into the driveway anymore, it was quite loud for a few years :anonymous: but its all good now

We are a few miles inland north of the city so salt air isn’t much of a problem. Prior to my buying it last year the truck lived all its life in Ocala which is even farther inland.

Gawd Dam, I've already had a stainless replaced under warranty from MagnaFlow.

No idea. I'm hard on exhaust as I do very short drives, never getting it warmed up.

2000 Tacoma I'm the original owner, 163500 miles or so. Replaced my original intermediate pipe and muffler assembly myself this past summer. Truck spent it's whole life in Ski Country Colorado at 9000 feet above sea level(Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain). Snow on ground from October to May. I do take it to carwash and spray down undercarriage often and it has lived in garage since 04. Kind of a garage queen, but definitely my transportation when it's snowing heavily, also tows my snowmobiles and jetskii's in summer.
Very satisfied with this truck, the silver queen has treated me well.upload_2020-1-23_22-24-17.jpg

This is a very good point, and worth noting. If you habitually take short trips in any vehicle, whether it's due to a short commute or just running local errands, the exhaust system can rot from the inside out. It's a cumulative thing that happens over a span of years.
Short trips will allow for condensate to build within the exhaust system and collect in the lower points, while longer trips allow for the entire system to get good and hot and burn all that schmutz out of there.

Several years ago, I inherited a car from my grandmother and it had been used only for trips to the grocery store for years and years. It had only 65k miles but one of the catalytic converters (which happened to be the lowest point in the front exhaust system) was completely rotten from the inside out. There was a hole big enough that I could actually look inside the cat and see the media inside. Short trips.
