I'm a miser when driving so minimal brake use but... I'm still on my factory pads at 40k miles... how long did your brake pads and shoes last? I feel like 40k is a bit crazy I recall I used to change fronts like every 25k or so and rears at like 50k on my old Ford.

Note: I rotated my tires recently and the fronts easily have 50% of their brake pad material left. I'm just surprised they last this long is all.

    53k and still going

just rotated tires a few weeks ago and have a lot of pad left.

I didn’t measure them but from an eyeball shot I’d say around 50% left. I even bought a set a few months ago for prep but might have been too proactive

    edit: for fronts*

*Useless self-gloat post here* but I swapped my stock pads out for Powerstop Z36's at 1200 miles because I couldn't handle their terrible performance anymore lol... so 1200 miles

I get about 50k on the fronts on both my 2nd and 3rd gen. I drive a ton of stop and go. Both trucks have warped rear drums, but the shoes are still good at 110k on the 2nd gen and 70k on my 3rd gen.

    Oh look, another mod....

Brake Pads: When to Replace Them

Your brakes are made up of three main parts: rotors, a metal wheel inside your tire attached to the overall brake system; calipers, which squeeze the rotor to cause friction to slow the car to a stop; and brake pads, which are attached to the calipers to keep them from scraping the rotor directly.

As a general rule, you should get your brake pads replaced every 10,000 to 20,000 miles to keep wear to a minimum (this is a suggestion, not a mandate). When it comes to your rotors, you have a bit longer. Your rotors should be replaced between 50,000 and 70,000 miles to keep your brakes in peak health.

When you hit these milestones, you should bring it in to our service center and we’ll check them for wear and damage.

Signs you need new brake pads: Squealing noises, clicking noises, it takes longer to stop, Your truck pulls to one side when braking, vibration in the pedal when braking.

Where did you find that BS. Brake pads 1000% do not need to be replaced every 10-20k.... I've had company cars go almost 100k without needing brakes.

People need to stop copy and pasting BS google info.

Replaced mine just shy of 50k. They still had a little life left, but I was headed out on a 3 week back country trip in the mountains and didn't want brake issues.

Agree with this. That is WAY too often. 50-80k is my average. My 4runner had completely dead pads in the rear and really low in the front at 65k.

I changed my pads/rotors at 97k, and had still not hit the wear indicators. If I had to purely guess, they had another 20k left in them. As for rotors, no issues with them either - just replaced bc the cost difference was worth my time NOT taking the old rotors in somewhere while my truck was down. I did keep them for next change though.

Didn't touch the rears at all; I'll replace the entire things when needed before messing around with that.

My pads are still looking good at 85k, but I had to replace the shoes around 50k

I am guessing my fronts have about 15K left at 59K miles. I will probably swap them with another set of factory pads at 65K, regardless. Rotors are still running true, so, that's nice. Haven't even removed a drum to look there. haha.

Maybe that information came from Callahan Auto Parts from the new brake pad division. Heard they got a new guy selling brakes all over the Midwest.

Would love to see what their suggestion is for oil changes. As a general rule, you should get oil changed every 1,000 to 2,000 miles to keep engine wear to a minimum.
