3rd Gen calling for 6.2 qt oil change. Unfortunately, oil comes in 1 and 5 quarts. Anyone done a 3rd Gen oil change before and just done the 5+1? Is there maybe 0.2 qt still in the system when drained? Or do I need to keep a bottle around to top it off each time?

PS if it makes any difference this is for my 1k oil change.

    edit 06 Feb
Good news! Did the oil change. Zero issues. I did just the drain and 6 qt and the oil line is smack dab in between the low and high marks after starting and running it for a few seconds. So, long of the short in case someone reads this in 2 years from now, the extra 0.2 is really not that important. Do the 6, check the oil line and likely it won’t be a problem.

Is the dealer not changing your oil for “free”? One extra $8 qt will last you 5 oil changes for your extra .2 each time. Seems like a low price to pay to keep your brand new truck long lasting...

Wow. Just when I thought all the possible 'oil questions' had been asked.

Won't hurt a thing. Put in 6 quarts and IF the oil ever reaches the add oil line on your dipstick then add one full quart at that time. Chances are good that you won't need to add any oil until your next oil change. Your dipstick has 2 marks on it. Your engine is fine as long as the oil level is anywhere in between those lines.

The 1k oil change is an unproven and debated thing. I know the engine manual says 10k. But, I will spend an extra 35 bucks and diy my first oil change at 1k because there's guaranteed no harm in doing it. There is an ungaurateed risk on not doing it. For a few bucks and 20 minutes, I'm not going to fuss over it and suck it up and do it.

Yes the dealership is doing oil changes but they'll do it at 10k, not at 1k like I'll be doing tonight or this weekend.

I can do the whole new bottle and use it for 5 and pull 0.2 each time, but for how little that is, I was hoping someone who does their own oil changes can let me know if the 6qt is between the fill lines on the dip.

Still amazed how overthought an oil change can be made.

Agree but its a big investment.

.2 qt isn't a big deal, and infact I prefer my oil to be slightly low on the dipstick from full.

Most Toyotas come from the factory .2 from full. It's normal.

If you don't put in the .2, you're still putting in 97% of the 6.2. That will DEFINITELY be between the two marks. (The .2 quart is 6 oz.)

I also hate having an open bottle of oil sitting around; just glug in the 6 quarts and you'll be fine.

hey good news I did it and it’s right smack dab between the low and high mark without the extra 0.2 so, We’re good.

I traded my '19 Tacoma SR 4 cylinder in last December and 2 weeks ago I went and traded back for it. Dodge/Ford service dept. changed the oil and it states on the service record "7 quarts" and a new oil filter which I can see is a Napa filter. It appears to me the oil level is a 1/2 inch above the full mark. Wondering if I should order a Toyota oil filter and get the oil changed or wait till my next oil change in October. I get my oil changed once a year because I drive under 4,000 a year.

I mean theres a reason why oil pressure is important. Cant too much or too little have a negative effect? Check your dipstick. If its way over, I would go with a change to the appropriate level.

Seeing how the filter is a "Napa" filter and was new 2 months ago would you leave it on and just drain and refill the oil to the proper level?

I don't see the harm in using the same filter if it was pretty recent. The goal here is proper oil level and not the cleanliness of the oil since it was just changed. Hopefully they put the right viscosity in there too.

Yeah it states, "0W-20" and it appears to be thin as water so I would say that part is O.K. (they used 0W-20)
