How can I check the condition of the upper and lower control arm bushings?

During my last off-road trip I heard a sharp metal-to-metal knock when I was negotiating a rather tight left turn on some rough ground at about 2 mph. Sounded like it was coming from the steering column but inside the engine compartment.

BTW I checked my LBJs and they are tight.

Forgot to mention that the truck has 100,000 miles on it.

subbd for curiosity if nothing else

do you have any pics of the bushings?
i am likely in the same boat as you at 143k and everything all original up front with mildish weathering, it probably needs some new parts one of these days! maybe on its 25th year as it will likely be a major expense needed to plan for
my 'off-roading' is basically limited to pulling off the highway onto a soft shoulder, nothing too hardcore
but everything sure gets a workout on the concrete trails that are in major disrepair around here

put a pry bar between the control arms bushing end and what ever there is to pry against and see if there is any play.
