I know it's a dumb question. I want to run 255/70R17s on my truck, what width rim will make it so the sidewalls aren't ballooning?

    6.5”, 7.5” preferred, 8.5” rim width recommendations.

See the tire manufacturer website and look at the specs for your size, and it will say Approved Rim Width, most are the same for particular tire size among the different manufacturers..Looks like for your desired tire is 6.5-8.5

    Good Luck

Thanks, I understand that the manufactures recommend a wheel width range for a given tire size. What I'm wondering is what's the difference if I went with a 6.5" or a 8.5" wide wheel? Will the wider wheel or the narrower wheel accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Wider rim will make the tire be lowrider’esque.
Narrower rim will make the tire have sidewall bulge.

IMO I like to keep the wheel at least 1.5-2” narrower than the section with of the tire.

Example 17x8.5 255/85/17 Like gotoman said ideally you would go with a 7 to 8 inch wheel for a 255, this insures adequate pressure on the bead when aired down.

@Jason12085 an 8 inch is ideal and won't cause ballooning or stretching of the tire. Avoid 7inch or 9 inch and your golden.
