I lifted my bed to remove my fuel pump to see why the fuel runs out when the guage is at 1/4 tank, but the pump has a black plastic cover on it. How do I remove this?

First. before you do anything, hose that tank down to remove any dirt or debris before opening up the tank.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
Hey OP, I did the same thing for exactly the same issue with the gauge. New pump assembly and all is good. I also replaced the vapor cannister.

Just send it, you gotta pry it up with a long screw driver or pry bar.

Thanks. I did figure it out and a long screwdriver did pry it. There are small tabs on each side. I also did take the air nozzle to the top before I removed the white ring. Everything seemed to be working properly and the resistance was proper 110 at the bottom (empty) and 4 at the top and the guage did properly read empty when the pump was out of the tank but when I put it all back together although the tank was empty it went back to reading 1/4 tank. I am wondering if the tank is warping and lifting the float?

Did you check the resistance across the whole range?
Some times you have have a “dead spot”. Or range where it doesn’t t read correctly.

Yes. It was 110 at bottom 90 at 1/4, progressing smoothly to 4 at the top.

    Thanks.

Could it be that the resistance is more at the gauge in the dash?
Maybe check the resistance at each connection between the sending unit and the dash. (If you have diagrams)

No. I don't think so. Increased resistance should increase ohms, which should cause the gauge to go lower, not higher. Higher guage reading is less resistance. At 1/4 it is seeing 90ohms. Empty, which is what the tank was at is read with 110ohms.

The only way I can think this is happening is that the sender unit is reading properly, but the float is lifted.

Probably fixed it just by fiddling with it. Might have been some debris obstructing the resistor.

    You'll know with some time.

How did the wires look, at their terminations?
