How do I find out what is a 2009 Tacoma actually worth?

Let me preface this by saying I searched for an existing thread on this topic but did not find one, if there is one and someone can point me in that direction, I would be much obliged

While I love my Tacoma, my 6'4" frame in the front seat is causing issues for my kids who are relegated to the back and it is unfortunately time to move on. I am trying to assess the value of my truck to figure out what to ask for it. I am planning to sell it myself. I have checked the following websites: KBB, Edmunds, NADA, VMR, and have seen an $8,000 difference in value using the same parameters.

    Here is what I have:
2009 Tacoma Double Cab Pre-Runner, Magnetic Grey, 84,000 miles more or less stock in pretty good condition (every website has a different word for this, its not a show car, but I take care of my vehicles and there are no issues with the truck either cosmetic or mechanical)

Here is what the numbers came back as:

    KBB: $17,980

    http://www.kbb.com/toyota/tacoma-do...e&condition=very-good&pricetype=private-party

    NADA: $21,075

    http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars/2009/Toyota/Tacoma-Double-Cab-V6/PreRunner-2WD/Values

    Edmunds: $16,137

    http://www.edmunds.com/toyota/tacoma/2009/tmv-appraise-results.html

    VMR: $13,650

    http://www.vmrintl.com/used-car/prices/2009-Toyota-TACOMA.html

WHAT?!?! How is there this much variability in this? According to the VMR site, adding 4WD to the same truck adds $7K to the value, that's over 50% more for 4WD, is that right?

What is a realistic number, and how can I substantiate that to a would be buyer.

Thanks in advance for the help.

See if you can find a similar truck for sale currently in your area and what it's priced at.
    or
Pick the highest number as a starting point.
    or
Average out the two highest numbers, use that as a starting point.
    or
Pick the lowest number and see if someone loves it so much they'll overpay thousands.

You used the main private party sales resources already, so those are your answers (albeit odd ones). What's it worth? Whatever someone will pay for it. What's the price to sell it at? That's up to you.

Thanks. Ultimately you are correct: it's worth what someone will pay for it.

I just can't believe the sites are that far off. Here is another question, where can I find out what a bank is willing to lend on it? I guess that would be a pretty good indication.

Look up other trucks with the same options and miles and see what they sold for. You can average all of the sites you listed and start there

Location [part of the country you live in] makes a huge difference in what any vehicle sells for. Demand drives pricing and you'll need to do some searching for vehicles that match yours reasonably closely and see what they are actually selling for. Once you do that, price it a bit high for dickering room but not so high that you won't get any interest.

2wd Pickups will generate far less interest and demand [and hence, a lower price] where I live VS someplace that 4wd isn't really needed for 1/2 the year and is somewhat looked at as an added maintenance expense and reduced fuel mileage.

Hey bud, look at the trade values given by those websites. I know in the southeast, 100% of the dealerships i know of use blackbook as their basis for true car values. Where you are in the country definitely affects your value, but a 4x4 will never add 7k of value to the exact truck in 4x2. Go to the dealership and see how much you can beat out of them for your truck. That will give you a very good reference point, and if they arent using blackbook, they are using NADA. And not the NADA you see online. . . Its a dirty game friend. I would go see what dealer would give on a trade in, then take it to carmax and quote them, then take it to autobuy after carmax. But, before you take it to autobuy, doctor your carmax appraisal and make their appraisal 500 bux more than they really gave you. Take it to autobuy with your truck and remind them they guarantee beating carmax by up to 1k. Trust me, it works. I bought a real nice 4x4 ram a few years back, drove it for a year, then sold it for about 400 bucks less than i paid because i could not live with the fuel eco or the ginormous scratch down the entire passenger side. Good luck

Personally, I am always checking craigslist for trucks similar to mine. Just like a house you base the value off the comps and what people are paying for them. If you haven't done that research over an extended period of time, I would throw out the low value and average the other 3 then add some for negotiations. I'd price it somewhere around 19k.

The truck is worth more thank you probably think. These usually sell for over book value and my book value has actually gone UP in the year I've owned it. No other daily-driver type vehicle can claim that.
